Struggling with composition? Here's a free lesson
Hey artists Are you struggling with composition in your landscape paintings? Composition is one of those things that comes up again and again, not knowing where to begin, feeling overwhelmed by a scene, not knowing how to arrange things so the painting actually works. So I'm sharing a free hour-long class I recorded live with a group of my painting students a couple of years ago. I walk through a collection of simple composition formulas that are easy to remember and easy to use in your own paintings, with lots of real examples throughout. Comment "COMPOSITION" below, and I'll send you the link. Happy painting, Sam P.S. Keep an eye out over the next few days. I've got something pretty exciting coming that I think a lot of you are going to love. More on that soon.

How to Paint a Coastal Scene in Oils - New Blog Post
Hey Artists If you've ever wanted to paint a dramatic coastal scene but weren't sure where to start, my latest post walks through exactly how I painted the Twelve Apostles in oils, from thumbnail sketches through to final highlights. I cover colour mixes for ocean blues, how to handle white water without it looking flat, and the brush techniques I use to keep things loose and painterly. It's a good read whether you're just starting out or looking to tighten up your seascape skills. Check it out here: 👇 https://samuelearp.com/blog/seascape-painting/ I'd love to see any coastal paintings you're working on. Drop them in the comments below! Cheers. Sam

Appreciate you sharing your process. Getting bogged down in detail early in a painting is a fault of mine. I plan to try out your method with future paintings. Currently I'm traveling and don't have time to paint but I enjoy following your shared blog and videos.

Nicely done. Like the orange in it for a pop of color
Bird of Paradise
Whipped this up for a friend this afternoon. Tried my hand at painting a flower. 7.25"x7.25" acrylics on the smooth (back) side of acrylic paper. Reference photo on right.

Gorgeous, eye-catching colors
Cat. Oil on canvas
This is an older painting. I have a tendency to get lost in details, and simplifying is something I still struggle with.
