Empowerment and responsibility for learning
Hi all! I had an unschooling thought this afternoon and wondered what others thought. I was thinking about a part of the world I wish I knew more about and felt kind of mad and embarrassed that I didn't know more about it, thinking things like "I learned almost nothing about that in school and I wish I did." And I often have similar types of thoughts like this about lots of things! I realized a lot of the time, even though I am unschooling my kids, I still have a mindset like my (school) education already happened to me and is over. I realized that in an unschooling mindset, hopefully kids become adults who are both empowered to learn their whole lives and also take on the responsibility for learning things they need or want to know. In an unschooling mindset, I can't blame my school for not teaching me something, I would feel empowered and responsible for trying to learn it now when I realized I needed to. All this while also holding the idea that I hope schools are always expanding what is taught to include perspectives from places and people who are way too often left out of the curriculum. So I think the anger at what we are taught or not taught in school is also very justified.

I am just seeing this now, @Kate Torres. Yes, I agree with you. We are taught to hand our learning over to school. That school will deliver all the information we need - so if we don't know something the school system is at fault. Unschooling is so much about personal responsibility in a really radical way. I love hearing your reflections.

@Melissa Ferris thanks for introducing yourself. I feel like I often had combined interests with my siblings. It was rare that only one of us was into something that we spent any real time on. I will ask my friend who has adult unschooled twins what her thought is on this. Growing up with her kids, I seem to remember the twins were pretty much a unit in everything until 13 or 14! I actually have a similar problem with my kids. I feel like I don't have time to help Ember with current interests and projects as much as they would enjoy and benefit from. that is more about the younger sibling still having high care needs. I try to reframe this in a deschooling context. Realizing that i am valuing academics or more structured learning over the important life skills and independence learned from being in a family unit. It helps me get grounded in our value of being together as a family.
