Empowerment and responsibility for learning
Hi all! I had an unschooling thought this afternoon and wondered what others thought. I was thinking about a part of the world I wish I knew more about and felt kind of mad and embarrassed that I didn't know more about it, thinking things like "I learned almost nothing about that in school and I wish I did." And I often have similar types of thoughts like this about lots of things! I realized a lot of the time, even though I am unschooling my kids, I still have a mindset like my (school) education already happened to me and is over. I realized that in an unschooling mindset, hopefully kids become adults who are both empowered to learn their whole lives and also take on the responsibility for learning things they need or want to know. In an unschooling mindset, I can't blame my school for not teaching me something, I would feel empowered and responsible for trying to learn it now when I realized I needed to. All this while also holding the idea that I hope schools are always expanding what is taught to include perspectives from places and people who are way too often left out of the curriculum. So I think the anger at what we are taught or not taught in school is also very justified.

@Jessica Morrison yeah, the school employee thing definitely resonates with me! 🙂 I love certain parts of schools and teaching after working in them and with kids in general for so long. When I was listening to a lot of Pam Laricchia's podcast Exploring Unschooling, they would mention how there is a strong educator (and I would imagine school worker) to unschooling line. I struggle sometimes with not having our kids in public schools because I really support all families having access to free childcare and education in a way that works for them. I wish there were a way for schools to function more like public community centers for kids with lots of positive adults and mentors who could help kids explore their passions, where kids could go when families want or need a drop off option. I hope to try to figure out how to still be in solidarity with teachers and public schools students and families, but I feel like I have so little time. We are really enjoying unschooling.
