Ex (12 yr marriage) turned 65
I am 65. Was on SSDI. (Am I now on straight SS?) Ex just turned 65. How do I determine how much of his SS am I eligible for? Have an appt with SSA in Oct. Been waiting since July. Is there anything I can do to start the process while I am waiting? Thank you.

The automatic change to SS retirement does not happen until you turn full retirement age, my guess for you is age 67. This is FRA for anyone born 1960 or later. Age 62 is the minimum age both of you must be to claim ex-spouse beneifits. So, you can apply now. I suggest calling SSA now, unless you want it unreduced at age 67. To find out if his is high enough for you to get more money, they (SSA) need to look up his info. Get an appointment to apply.
Younger ex husband
I’m wanting to start receiving my SS at 62. My ex husband of 22 years is younger than me- so I d like to know if I can switch to his SS when he reaches 62. By then I’ll be 64 and would have been drawing mine for two years.

You need to be receiving your own benefit to apply for ex-spouse benefits. If your PIA is lower than half of his PIA, you can when he is 62. More requirements: your marriage was al least 10 years long and one of these two (your divorce was over 2 years ago OR he is receiving benefits.) Because this is taking place before full retirement age, yor dollars will be reducde. PIA = primary insurance amount
Don’t understand why
Thank you for being there for us. Doctor weir really appreciate you.Social Security website in the graphic it shows a certain amount of money when I retire 67 or 70 called the Social Security office and was told that the amount was a lot less why is that?

Verify they have all of your work history/earnings. It is possible it is not complete, which could give you a lower calculated benefit.

Sorry, with a death in family I have been away not keeping up. Get an online account for SSA.gov. There is a report in there with your earning history. Check for gaps.

When do I start Social Security?
I turned 67 next June, but I’d like to start receiving Social Security in January. I still work full-time. What is the earnings threshold for me?

The rule is different the year you reach FRA. In the months Jan - May there is a monthly limit of $5430, and no limit June - Dec. If you go over that limit $1 is withheld for every $3 earned over the limit. If you decide to keep working in 2028 or even beyond, there is no limit.
