Huxley did a runner!!
Yesterday my son was walking Huxley in the woods near our house. It was around 5.30pm, so getting closer to dusk. He was working him, hunting for balls and sticks and felt that he was engaged with him and the walk was going well. Rory noticed that he suddenly changed direction with his sniffing, he whistled, Hux ignored him and ran. He did have a 2m dangling lead on but it was not in reach when he ran. He has a tracker but Rory had forgotten his phone so couldn't use it. He was gone for 15 mins, completely out of sight, whilst Rory was looking for him and whistling. Finally Huxley returned, running back to Rory with a big happy face. He was panting, covered in saliva. Rory made a big fuss of him for coming back. Put him on the lead and came home. We can see from his tracker that he had ran into a coppiced wood area, somewhere i take him too. The trees are very close together and he loves darting between them looking for whatever I've hidden for him to find. He could have found his way to the road from there. Worryingly dangerous. Help. Where do we start with that?

I can really see how this will work for him. We've obviously jumped too far ahead with his training, so will go back to basics. Thanks Chris
Rolo, counter surfing
Any tips, guidance on how to stop counter surfing. There is never food left on worktop(although in this clip there is a bowl of crisps), but he jumps up constantly. Especially when I’m prepping food. He also likes to grab the tea towel and run off with it

Hux tries that too. Opportunistic!
Impulse control : So overlooked but vitally important
New Video: Working Impulse Control with Young Boris 🐾 I’ve just uploaded a new video where I begin some impulse control work with Boris, a young dog right at the start of his training journey. Impulse control is so often overlooked at the outset of training, but it’s absolutely vital. Without it, we see all sorts of unwanted behaviours: - Jumping up because the dog just can’t resist the excitement - Chasing after other dogs, birds, rabbits, or cyclists - Charging chaotically around the dog park - Total mayhem when the doorbell rings -Reactivity All of those behaviours come down to the same challenge—struggling to manage impulses. That’s why we start here. In this video, you’ll see a powerful example of it. As I release the other four dogs, Boris wants , with every fibre in his body to leap up and join them. You can practically see the energy running through him! Yet even though every instinct is telling him to go, he manages to hold himself back. That little moment of self-control is huge—so well done, Boris for finding your pause button. 👏 This is only one way of beginning to build impulse control, but these first steps are the foundation that prevents bigger problems later on. A dog that can master these small victories becomes easier to live with, safer in the real world, and far more enjoyable to take anywhere. 👉 Watch the video and notice how much effort young Boris is putting into keeping himself together—it’s the start of something really important. 2 days ago he was as good as totally feral

I love that! Well done Boris. "He's a bit of a nutcase" 😂. Sounds familiar...
Consistent behaviour please 🙏
Yesterday, I had 2 fantastic walks with my springer Huxley, he came on the whistle, worked hard all around me, said hi to a few doggy friends and then continued with me on our walk. I was able to keep his smiley faced focus on me and it was joyful. This morning, he was like a different dog. Recall - what's that? Mum - who's she? I ended up keeping him on the lead because his head was all over the place. What was different about yesterday and today? I was doing the same things with him, we were even in the same woods. The sun was shining and it's a bit blowy today and it was damp yesterday - would that be why he was different? I always feel like we do 2 steps forward and 1 step back. I'd like to achieve some consistency in behaviour on our walks.

Life with an adolescent springer spaniel is a mixture of pure joy, craziness and the odd sprinkle of frustration!
