Thank you to everyone who joined us live! ๐ŸŽ‰ The energy, honesty, and generosity in the conversation made this one especially fun and impactful. If you were there, you already know this wasnโ€™t a presentation-heavy session. It was a ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น, ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ-๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป with thoughtful insights and a strong breakout discussion that sparked practical ideas many people said they want to take back to their boards. If you couldnโ€™t join us live, hereโ€™s a snapshot of what you missed ๐Ÿ‘‡ ๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ช๐—ฒ ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฝ Participants shared real-world challenges and ideas around onboarding, including: โ€ข How to define success for new board members in the first 6 months โ€ข The importance of clarity around expectations early on โ€ข Ways to help board members connect with staff and the mission beyond meetings โ€ข Thoughtful discussion about peer mentors or board buddies, what works and where it can go wrong โ€ข Recognition that onboarding looks very different depending on the stage of the organization, start-up versus large, established nonprofit One participant summed it up perfectly: โ โ”ƒ โ€œI love the mid-year check-in. It sets the stage for ongoing engagement and growth.โ€ โž ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—›๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐—น๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ While not everything shows up in the chat, the breakout rooms sparked some of the strongest discussion of the session. Members shared: โ€ข Practical ways theyโ€™ve handled attendance, accountability, and engagement challenges โ€ข How empathy and accountability can, and should, coexist โ€ข Ideas for involving board members early without overwhelming staff or leadership Several attendees shared afterward that theyโ€™d love more time in group discussion, a great signal for future sessions. ๐Ÿ“Œ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€ A few themes rose to the top: โ€ข Onboarding isnโ€™t a moment. Itโ€™s a process. โ€ข Clear expectations early prevent frustration later โ€ข Engagement grows when board members understand how they add value โ€ข Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all approach. Context matters.

When I first joined a Board a few years ago, the ED and my peers did a wonderful job of creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They seemed genuinely curious about me and my connection to the organization. Where we needed to improve was communicating the mission and the myriad of services being offered. It took a while for the Board to truly understand the tangible value the organization provided.

Upcoming Event: Creating Impact from the Start - Setting New Board Members Up for Success Visit the Calendar Page to sign up ๐Ÿ‘‰https://www.skool.com/nfp-board-impact-collective-7353/calendar?eid=77312421ad6d414d980e12e7ae83df57 ๐Ÿ“… Tuesday, January 27 โฐ 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PTโฑ 45 minutes ๐ŸŽŸ Free for members of the Non-Profit Board Impact Collective Many nonprofit boards assume onboarding โ€œjust happens.โ€ A new board member is handed a stack of documents, attends a few meetings, and is expected to contribute confidently right away. But we hear a different story from board members all the time: - โ€œI wasnโ€™t clear on what was expected of me.โ€ - โ€œIt took months to feel useful.โ€ - โ€œWeโ€™re missing opportunities to tap into peopleโ€™s skills and networks.โ€ Poor onboarding doesnโ€™t just slow people down โ€” it leads to disengagement, frustration, and missed impact. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re hosting this live, peer-driven conversation to surface what actually works. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Who This Session Is For This session is especially valuable if you are: - A current nonprofit board member - A board chair, officer, or governance committee member - Involved in recruiting or onboarding new board members - Looking to improve board engagement and effectiveness early on Whether you joined a board recently or youโ€™ve been onboarding others for years, youโ€™ll leave with ideas you can use immediately. ๐ŸŽฏ What Youโ€™ll Learn By the end of the session, youโ€™ll: - Identify 2โ€“3 onboarding practices that help new board members get confident and engaged faster - Recognize common onboarding gaps that unintentionally hold people back - Gain peer-tested ideas you can adapt to your own board โ€” without adding complexity or extra work ๐Ÿงญ How the Session Will Work This is not a webinar and not a presentation. This is a peer-led conversation designed to help board members learn from one another and leave with ideas they can actually use.

I'm excited to share my experience regarding onboarding Board members and we'll have opportunity for practical discussion so your 2026 starts off with engaged, informed, and productive new Board members! See you there!
I need your help with implementing term limits
We have been discussing term limits on our board and are considering 3 3-year terms. I am curious what term limits others have put in place. Also, we currently have a couple of board members with a longer tenure and I wonder how we might approach the issue with those people without being disrespectful?

We have two, 3 year terms, which is quite a commitment when you consider the average tenure in a corporate leadership role is less than 3 yearsโ€ฆ I agree that starting the conversation as a group to discuss the benefits of implementing this process with private conversations for those whoโ€™ve served a long time. My suggestion would be to have several opportunities ready for alternative ways to serve if not a Board member - joining a committee, volunteering, sharing hours for pro bono work, etc. this way they can stay engaged and continue to serve the mission.
