📊 Mid-Year Budget Reviews: Resources Now Available
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent discussion, Mid-Year Budget Reviews: Adapting When Things Don't Go as Expected. This was one of our most practical conversations to date, focusing on how boards and Executive Directors can work together when financial realities differ from the original plan. During the session, we explored: → The 5 R's Review Cycle: Review, Reassess, Reset, Respond, and Communicate → How to evaluate budget variances without losing accountability → The importance of scenario planning and preparing for multiple outcomes → Why transparency and proactive communication matter during periods of uncertainty → Using the SBI Framework to navigate difficult conversations about performance, expectations, and accountability One theme emerged throughout the discussion: Strong boards are not successful because everything goes according to plan. They are successful because they recognize change early and respond thoughtfully. 📎 Attached: Event Presentation Slides 📎 Attached: Executive Summary The Executive Summary captures key insights, participant perspectives, practical takeaways, and discussion highlights from the session. We encourage you to review both resources and continue the conversation below. 💬 Discussion Question: What is one practice your board uses, or could begin using, to identify challenges earlier and respond before small issues become larger problems? Thank you for being part of the Nonprofit Board Impact Collective. Your experiences, perspectives, and willingness to share are what make these conversations so valuable.

Don't Miss Our Upcoming Event: Mid-Year Budget Reviews
Adapting When Things Don't Go as Expected 📅 Thursday, June 18, 2026 ⏰ 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT Zoom Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/zlfr9BIlQY-SwNELCU__XA#/registration Every nonprofit starts the year with a plan. Budgets are approved. Goals are established. Success metrics are defined. But halfway through the year, reality often looks different than what was projected. Revenue may be ahead or behind expectations. Expenses can shift unexpectedly. Strategic priorities evolve. New opportunities emerge. The strongest organizations are not the ones that avoid surprises. They're the ones that recognize them early and respond thoughtfully. Join us for a practical, peer-driven discussion on how boards and Executive Directors can work together to: → Review financial performance and organizational goals → Reassess assumptions when circumstances change → Reset priorities and metrics when necessary → Respond before challenges become larger problems → Communicate openly and constructively about performance We'll also revisit the SBI Framework (Situation, Behavior, Impact) and discuss how it can help boards navigate some of the most challenging conversations with Executive Directors around accountability, performance, and changing expectations. Discussion Question 💬 Has your board ever had to significantly adjust goals or budget expectations mid-year? What helped the conversation go well, or what made it difficult? We look forward to learning from each other's experiences. 👉 Register and join us live on June 18. Zoom Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/zlfr9BIlQY-SwNELCU__XA#/registration

📘 Executive Summary Now Available: Difficult Conversations Part 2
📘 Executive Summary Now Available: Difficult Conversations Part 2 Thank you to everyone who joined us for Inside the Non-Profit Board Room: Difficult Conversations Part 2: Giving and Receiving Feedback. This was one of our most engaging conversations yet. Members shared real-world challenges, practical solutions, and honest reflections about one of the most important skills in nonprofit leadership: giving and receiving feedback effectively. Attached is the Executive Summary from the session. We've also uploaded it to the Classroom for anyone who would like to revisit the discussion or share key insights with fellow board members. Inside the Executive Summary: ✔️ Why feedback is often avoided and why it matters ✔️ The G.R.A.C.E. Framework for approaching difficult conversations with confidence and compassion ✔️ The SBI+Q Framework for delivering feedback that is clear, constructive, and solution-oriented ✔️ Practical strategies for receiving feedback without becoming defensive ✔️ Key themes and insights that emerged from participant discussion ✔️ Actionable takeaways boards can implement immediately One theme surfaced repeatedly throughout the session: Many difficult conversations become easier, or can be prevented altogether, when boards invest early in clarity, communication, onboarding, and ongoing feedback. A few participant reflections that stood out: 💬 "I will keep the G.R.A.C.E. framework in mind. Very helpful both in anticipation of a conversation and in the moment." 💬 "Framing the concern in terms of support and change, rather than criticism, is affirming." 💬 "We have more than one difficult conversation ahead. Thank you for the practical tools and encouragement." If you attended, we'd love to hear: 👉 What was your biggest takeaway from the session? If you're reviewing the materials for the first time: 👉 Which idea or framework do you think would have the greatest impact on your board? The Executive Summary is attached and in the Classroom. Thank you for continuing to make the Nonprofit Board Impact Collective such a thoughtful and supportive community. 🌟
