It’s been seven weeks since we got back from our six‑week sprint through South Africa — and somehow the pneumonia I picked up has lasted longer than the entire trip. Only in my life do I manage to out-travel most South Africans and out-suffer my own lungs in the same season. In those six weeks we covered more ground than the average oke does in a year. Every day was another province, another padstal, another “just one more stop” from Fiona — who, despite my protests, refused to let me enjoy a single peaceful moment. I’d be admiring a Karoo sunset and she’d already be halfway to planning the next highlight like a caffeinated tour guide. Now that I can finally breathe again without sounding like a 1970s diesel bakkie, the plan is simple: finish the big projects, get life sorted, and then come back for a slower, deeper, more intentional trip. A Gauteng loop. A Newcastle visit for my daughter and family. A Cape Town reset with my mum and the clan. And then three glorious weeks to reconnect with the country that built me. South Africa still sits in my chest — figuratively, thankfully. The pneumonia has finally moved out. Can’t wait to be back on that soil again.
