๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Did you know?
This morning I was reminded yet again of the wonderful country we live in. Iโ€™ve got guests visiting from Potchefstroom โ€” the place where I was born and spent most of my years. It took me back to memories of Vredefort, where my grandpa had a farm, and where we took Sunday School kids and Scouts for camp. And of course, I thought about the Vredefort Dome โ€” over 2 billion years old and so massive itโ€™s visible from space! ๐ŸŒ Did you know that from the warm Indian Ocean waves of Durban to the icy Atlantic waters of Cape Town, our coastline is one of the most diverse in the world? For me it was just a reminder this morning that our land carries stories far older than us, shaping the beauty we see today. Letโ€™s share those stories with fellow members who donโ€™t know South Africa like we do. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Drop your favourite Did you know fact below โ€” letโ€™s celebrate the hidden gems of Mzansi together.

I used to spend many weekends when I lived in Joburg exploring everywhere and I loved the river. The birds were always my first love. What I find about Gauteng is that most people living there do not know what is on their doorstep. I could seriously live in Joburg, not travel more than 3 hours every weekend and still not get to see everything there is to see in a decade.

@Sandy Chong in Europe, they do grow maize, but its not really anything as interesting as our mealies. These are NOT for human consumption and are bland and gross. How do I know, I tried some, not once but several times.

A Roadhouse
what was your favourite menu item to order? Mine was the malted Milkshakes...double thick. The favourite for many burgers, chips and gravy. I am sure most of us remember this Roadhouse in Highlands North, The Dolls House, its about to be demolished.

@Oliver Wing You can meet some awesome people there, made a couple of IG connections. I really enjoyed the iced Rooibos tea, it was perfect for the hot day we visited. We also brought back some jams we bought there, Cape Gooseberry and Quince jelly in particular. We still have some left.

@Sandy Chong I think we accidently ripped out many speakers... especially my mates, they were usually filled with lager or sweet wine.
How can you not love this beautiful country?
I just have to share this morningโ€™s sunrise here on the East Coast โ€” it was absolutely breathtaking. Moments like these remind us how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of South Africa. The colours, the calm, the promise of a new dayโ€ฆ pure magic. ๐ŸŽฅ Got a sunrise or sunset clip that captures your corner of South Africa? Share it with us.

@Tamsin Boshoff Okay, we did not see the beachfront when we met your Mum. Before that visit I was in Ballito visiting family as a child, probably 60 years ago.

When Nature Speaks....
What else can make South Africa so lekker as to hear the nature sing songs for us? I took this with my cell phone in 2023 and I wonder if @Gareth Parkes can maybe identify this bird for us?

@Christo Kriegler I spoke to one of my ornithologist contacts, he knew what it was immediately.

@Tamsin Boshoff Clarens is awesome, in Winter (Juneโ€“August) dramatic, cold, sometimes snow on the Maluti peaks. Great for photography and cosy cafรฉs which there are plenty of. Up to 4 hours (300km) from Joburg, Road to Villiers is boring but beyond is awesome: N1 South โ†’ R59 โ†’ R26 โ†’ Clarens. Fi and I were lucky as we were there in February during the beer fest. Autumn (Marchโ€“May) is the absolute best time to visit โ€” golden poplars, crisp air, clear mountain views.
