Vaccines
Has anyone else taken the Pneumococcal vaccine? Do you feel this is necessary. Interested in the groups views.

This depends on the country/region a bit as far as official guidelines. Many places will only consider it if you are 65+, immunocompromised (HIV, leukemia, chronic kidney disease), or have predisposing disease (heart failure, lung disease, liver disease). The argument for celiac lies in the idea that it could cause functional asplenia. People with anatomic asplenia (meaning they dont have a spleen or have physical issues that prevent it from working) typically get this vaccine. However, with celiac, we have spleens and they should work, but there is some evidence to show functional asplenia could occur in those with celiac disease. All this to say, in my mind if you are under 65 but have had diagnosed pneumonia, have other (non celiac) lung/heart/liver disease, immunocompromising conditions, or diagnosed asplenia, it’s worth asking for. If you are under 65 and haven’t had any of those or pneumonia, may not necessarily be worth it or indicated.
Coeliac diagnosis
Hi everyone has anyone else been diagnosed but never had a referral for a dietician or to have a bone scan? Just curious.

Bone scan guidelines depend on country and region (as do dietician referrals). Where I am located, only if there is evidence of osteoporosis or osteopenia or if the person is past a certain age are bone scans sent. Dietician referrals are possible here, but oftentimes doctors may not be aware of this option so it may be something you need to bring up with them and discuss!
Fatigue
Hi everyone!! I’ve really been struggling with the fatigue that comes along with coeliac, usually having to have 2 hour naps every day, struggling to wake up, and to stay awake when I go out. Some days it’s more severe than other days, and I’m currently going through quite an intense patch (just woke up from a 3 hour nap where I was meant to be working….) and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to boost energy levels! (Not coffee, my stomach HATES coffee 😣)

As someone in healthcare, I’d really recommend rather than taking generic multivitamins/wasting too much money/time if they won’t help with the fatigue, I’d recommend focusing on the evidenced based ones for celiac (pending of course lab results, chatting with your doc for some of the ones that can be harmful in higher amounts)! If you’re in the northern hemisphere, just about everybody should be taking 1000IU Vitamin D daily especially in winter/darker months. Celiac specific deficiencies are commonly B vitamins like B12 and folate, magnesium, iron. This said, these come with side effects and need different dosing frequencies/methods depending on your needs (for example, if you go out to buy folate you’ll most often see the prenatal dose rather than the deficiency dose) so it’s best to get labs and chat with your doctor. For example, I take iron in liquid form for better absorption and minimizing side effects I had. For some, b12 or iron shots are needed. For others, sublingual b12 is recommended. Taking too many vitamins that aren’t needed is not only a bother and expensive while not helping, but also can result in side effects and even increased risk of certain diseases/cancers.

Apart from vitamin deficiencies, balancing my meals has been huge as insulin resistance can lead to more crashes/naps and can be more common in people with celiac (as well as increased incidence of pcos). To simply this, anything that is purely sugar/carbs if eaten alone can lead to big fluctuations in sugars and energy crashes. If you balance out pure carbs/sugars with fibre (especially soluble fibre) and protein it REALLY helps. For example, rather than having a piece of bread or cereal on its own, see if you can add in fibre like chia seeds and protein sources (I often use ultrafiltered high protein milk which is also lactose free). When I consistently do this and think about “cushioning” carbs/sugars with a protein and fibre source, I notice way less crashes and my stomach feels better too (no coffee needed)!
GF Pierogi!
Anyone have those favourite foods/recipes they're nervous to try after diagnosis because it'd be heartbreaking if the GF version doesn't feel/taste the same? Pierogis were one of mine- I put it off for some time and finally attempted last week. I was so relieved they felt and tasted the same and that I could still fold them nicely! Here's the recipe :) https://glutenfreeonashoestring.com/gluten-free-potato-pierogi/

@Ellie Slater They turned out delicious and were super easy! I didn't even use a recipe for the filling- just potato, cheese, sour cream and some seasoning :)

@Emma Gifford I used Bob’s red mill 1:1, but still use xantham gum for their recipes- gluten free on a shoestring lists flour options linked in the recipe which I found super helpful!
Keto bread!
Hi everyone! I tried out another surprising bread recipe and it turned out really good, so thought I'd share. This is a keto gluten free bread recipe I saw on YouTube (Ela Vegan channel). It basically has zero carbs - which I didn't think was possible for bread! I was doubtful this would work, but it did! You need: - 240g whole golden flaxseeds - 40g psyllium husk powder - 2 tsp baking powder - 4g salt - 320ml hot water And here's how you make it: 1. Pre-heat your oven at 180°C - set it to fan heat 2. Grind the flaxseeds to a fine powder (I used my Thermomix, but I guess the best is to use a spice or coffee grinder) 3. Put the flaxseed powder in a bowl and add the psyllium husk powder, baking powder and salt. 4. Mix 5. Add the water and mix. I had to add about 2 tbsp of water as it was a bit too dry. 6. Form this into a bread and place on a non-stick baking paper 7. Bake for 50 minutes My bread almost tripled in size, it was quite impressive! It tastes really nice. The only thing I'd say is the texture is quite light. I like it but I prefer my usual loaves of gluten free bread that have a bit more "substance", if that makes sense. Anyway, hope this inspires someone! Definitely an easy loaf to make and it's great that it's without carbs.
