What is kenjutsu
In class I have heard many times "it's all kenjutsu." When I first started that didn't really make sense, I mean in basic terms, kenjutsu is the art of Japanese swordsmanship. Over time I started thinking how our principles of posture, relaxation and breathing can be applied in our everyday lives. For example when cleaning snow off my car I focused on using my hips to move my arm. When driving I think about my posture and when traffic is crazy good time to practice breathing and relaxation. 🙂 What are your thoughts about the phrase "it's all kenjutsu" ?

Great post and awesome points from everyone. Being fairly new to Kenjutsu but having experience in other unarmed styles it’s incredible to see how it all ties together.
Training Weapons & Order Links
I'm excited to announce a new section with links to purchase the best bokken and bo-tanto you can find for Nami Ryu kenjutsu and tanto-jutsu. Check out the section called "Training Weapons & Order Links" in the Kenjutsu Basics section.

Awesome, thank you Sensei
Food for thought about relaxation.
Hi everyone. Those who have been training awhile have heard the mantra posture, relaxation and breathing. Those new to kenjutsu, you will hear it. A lot. 🙂 I would like to comment on relaxation. One of the things we worked on in class today was jab and cross. Now for me coming from a Taekwondo background I am used to throwing punches hard and fast. Fist relaxed until point of impact then tense on impact. Relax again after. Tonight we focused on being relaxed the entire time. I was able to generate as much impact going slow as going fast. It may sound counter intuitive but the softer and more relaxed I was the more impact I had. What are your thoughts and experiences relating to relaxation in your training?

One thing that all my striking instructors, regardless of style, always told me was to “relax”. It took work, but when I finally did, I found the same results as you, better speed, power, timing, everything. It even relates to grappling too. If we’re tense, our opponents can feel it and can read our movements as we’re connected to them. When we relax, we give less away and can move with much more effective energy. Easier said than done of course, I’m constantly needing reminders to just relax.

@Joanne Hunter as with us all, it’s a never ending journey, so I’m told haha
Welcome!
Welcome to Nami ryu Kenjutsu online. I'm excited to have you here, and to share your passion for learning Japanese swordsmanship. ⚔️ Please take a minute to introduce yourself and share what motivates you to learn kenjutsu. Maybe you're into Kurosawa movies, the samurai, or Japanese swords, or maybe you've wanted to learn Japanese swordsmanship but don't have a place to train or a community to support you. We'd like to know what brought you here!

Hey! I’m Josh from the Sunshine Coast in BC, Canada. I’m a K9 handler working in Private Security, a musician, and a martial artist with several years experience in various styles ranging from Boxing/Kickboxing, BJJ, MMA, to more traditional styles such as Karate and some traditional Jujutsu as well. My focus now being Jiujitsu and Nami Ryu. I’ve been drawn to edged weapons for a very long time, since childhood, but had trouble finding teachers in the styles that I wanted to learn over the years. I did receive some small bits of instruction in Japanese sword, and Western Longsword, but it was fairly minimal. I’ve always had a great respect for the Samurai and the arts they trained in. Not just their combat training, but their moral code and mental/spiritual skills that they strove to develop as well. I believe that as a martial artist, or even in any role or position one finds themselves in, this is extremely necessary. I’m very pleased to have finally found this community of like minded students and incredible teachers. I’m looking forward to the journey ahead with all of you.

@Randy George Thank you! It’s an honour.
Hello
Hi Everyone, just thought I would drop a note to see how people are doing. What are you working on as far as kenjutsu? I have been focusing on posture and proper walking and opening. Hope everyone is doing well!

Hey Joanne, very cool. I’m currently working the basics as far as Kenjutsu goes, like you. Posture, walking, basic cuts. The building blocks for what’s to come!
