13 contributions to Power Engineering 101
šŸ“¢ I’m proud to share that I have officially been awarded my 3rd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency through ABSA.
This milestone is a reflection of years (2006 start) of dedication, resilience, and hands-on experience in Canada’s energy sector. Over the most recent several years, I’ve had the privilege to contribute to some dynamic projects, including: šŸ”¹ Assistant Shift Engineer – Keyera Simonette Gas Plant Operating in a high-capacity midstream facility (450 MMcf/d sour gas & 27,000 bbl/d condensate), with responsibility for cryogenic and sour gas processing, amine & dehydration units, fractionation, compressors, and SCADA/DCS monitoring. Supporting safe operations, hazard mitigation, and contractor onboarding while optimizing plant performance. šŸ”¹ Process Foreman – Sancon Commissioning (Pembina Brownfield Upgrade) Leading commissioning and startup activities, mechanical isolations, permit-to-work processes, lockout/tagout procedures, and SOP development. Ensuring safe turnover of systems and alignment with client standards during critical project phases. šŸ”¹ Contract Operator – S2F Global Resources Supporting Strathcona’s HIP VAP R&D pilot for SAGD steam generation using produced water (GHG reduction & water treatment innovation). Additionally, operating AltaGas’ Townsend deepcut, shallow cut, and mercaptan plant (550 MMscf/d) with responsibility for isolations, inspections, and emergency readiness. These experiences have deepened my industry service commitments and further shaped me into a safety-first, technically versatile operator who thrives on collaboration, problem-solving, and continual learning. Looking ahead, I am already actively pursuing my 2nd Class certification with study materials in hand and initial program underway in the Power Engineering 101 modules. This certification is not the finish line; it’s a steppingstone toward continued professional growth and contribution to Western Canada's power and natural gas industry.

2A1 multiple Choice Exam I had 12 code questions 5 of which were calculations the others could be looked up in the code book. Administration section was heavy on Law and the health and safety chapter 7 Only a hand full of management and plant construction questions. Approximately 25 to 30 calculation questions mostly mechanics, radius of gyration, some friction and fluid mechanics, Ke and Pe and scew jacks. The rest were theory based. The wording on several theory and Administration answers were tricky so be aware As mentioned by members here and on Facebook pages it's a rush to get all the questions done in 3 hours. I was there as were a few others right to the end and had to guess some of them. You need to be quick on the calculations and can't let yourself get caught up on one challenging question time is not on you side for this exam. Good luck to those who are going to write and godspeed
šŸŒŽ Exciting News! I’ve registered to attend the Global Energy Show Canada 2025 in Calgary on June 10-12 at the BMO Centre! šŸš€
This event is a fantastic opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with industry peers, technology leaders, and innovators who are shaping the future of energy. From cutting-edge advancements in LNG and renewables to the latest in power engineering and infrastructure, I’m looking forward to exchanging ideas and insights. šŸ¤ Let’s Connect! If you’re also attending, let’s set up a time to meet! I’d love to chat about industry trends, challenges, and opportunities—or simply connect over a coffee. If you’ll be in Calgary around the same dates, feel free to reach out to arrange a meeting. @Carrmen Kirsh No unfortunately I'm in Manitoba and scheduled to work maybe next time.
1A2 Exam Passed!
Wrote in Calgary yesterday morning and had my pass letter emailed by the time I reached Wetaskiwin. Many thanks to Normand and the Team for the help! This is the second time I’ve signed up with you folks…first time I flunked and you honoured the money back guarantee so I felt it only right I try again. This second time went the right way and I couldn’t be more happy (well maybe more relieved than happy but whose keeping track šŸ˜‚). One more pile of fuel for the boiler! Cheers all 🄃
