Progress Over Perfection 🎶
I used to obsess over getting everything just right on guitar when I started.. ..and honestly, I was setting myself up to fail. Because I was a beginner comparing my guitar skills and sounds against a well polished guitarist, playing on a finished recording I wanted to sound like. No matter how much I could try to force it, at the stage, I wasn't going to sound like Noel Gallagher playing Wonderwall. And this pattern would emerge in different forms throughout my journey.. When I started to learn how to improvise, I was comparing my first efforts against how well Slash could solo..🤣 👉 Key lesson: High expectations lead to low enjoyment on guitar. ⭐️ Aim for progress over perfection. It's an old saying, but the only person you really should compare yourself to is the player you were 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years ago... That is the comparison to make, and make it a gentle comparison.. Backed by future looking questions such as: 1. What should I do more of? 2. What do I need to do less of? 3. What would I have done differently, knowing what I know now? Make the adjustments, and continue along your journey. 🚀 There are a handful of spaces available for a 1-1 playing assessment this coming week: You'll come away with a personalised roadmap to help you reach your guitar goals. 📩 DM me ROADMAP to see if you qualify.

I agree with @Dave Donoghue and to add to that I have found that concentrating on a few things and trying to do them well is better than a scattergun approach flitting from one song to another, from one YouTuber to another. I'd also add that video recording yourself is really helpful as that provides a benchmark, that snapshot in time that you can return so you can (hopefully!) see progress.
What do you play more of? (Electric or Acoustic) 🎶
Curious! I've noticed a mix of your guitar interests, so just I get a feel for content going forward 🙏 Share your preference below!👇

@Leon Mattear Welcome. I've just joined and I live on the edge of the Peak District in Sheffield. Derbyshire is a lovely county. Keep strummin' and I look forward to hearing about your progress.

@Dave Donoghue Agree on the two key phases point! I play folk stuff but find I have to really concentrate on jazz to get anywhere near a decent sound.
Not too old to learn
Thanks for letting me join the group hoping to learn from everyone.

Never too old @Steven Sadler and I've just joined today. Started playing the guitar in the late 1960s....and hoping to make up for lost time.

This is the place to make a post with some songs you would LOVE to learn on guitar, and be able to play..🎶 Let's make this a thread to inspire some ideas as well as share your dream songs! 📋 See, a lot of driven and focused guitar players I've met have an idea of what songs they want to play 🚀 ..and hey, if you're thinking right now "but I dunno what I'd love to be able to play Dave..."🤔 Have a read through, and then have a think about some songs you'd love to play... For a moment, just allow your imagination to wander 🥳 These successful guitar players I shared with you about use these songs as: 🧭 A compass point 🗺️ A GPS coordinate ⛰️ A mountain to gently climb So my question to you today: - What are some songs you'd LOVE to be able to play on guitar? - Which of these would be a "breakthrough" for you? - Do you have any guitar heroes you'd love to play like?
