Your First Leadership Check In
Before you continue, I want you to think about where you are as a leader today. What is the one area of your leadership you most want to strengthen right now, and why? Be specific. Your answer does not need to be long. There is no right answer here. What matters is that you are honest about where you are today. This gives you a starting point you can come back to later and see what has changed Put your answer in the comments below.

Introduce Yourself to the Unified Leadership Academy
Welcome to Unified Leadership Academy. We want to know who is joining us, not just what you do. Tell us a little about yourself. 1. What is your name and where are you from? 2. What do you do, or what are you working toward? 3. Who do you currently lead? This could be a team, a business, a family, a community, or simply yourself. 4. What is something about you we would never know from your job title? 5. What do you hope to get from being part of Unified Leadership Academy? Do not worry about making this sound perfect. Just be yourself. Once you have introduced yourself, take a few minutes to read another member's introduction. Leave a comment, ask a question, or find something you have in common. Leadership begins with connection. Start making one.

Hi everyone! I’m Heather. I grew up in Iowa, spent some time in Tennessee, and now call Florida home. After more than a decade in corporate America, including five years in Learning & Development, I took the leap and started my own company, J. Myrtle Training & Development Partners. I facilitate leadership and team workshops focused on creating environments where people can thrive, not just survive. So far, I am a company of one with networking assistance from my husband. Something you probably wouldn’t guess from my work? I also own a novelty ice cream trailer! It’s a fun way to spread some cheer. I joined Unified Leadership Academy because I’m looking for connection, opportunities to learn, and a community that challenges me to grow. I’m also working on becoming more visible and seeking more facilitation and speaking opportunities. I’m excited to learn from all of you, share what I can, and hopefully make some great connections along the way. Looking forward to getting to know everyone!
WARNING 🔥 UNPOPULAR LEADERSHIP OPINION:
“Don’t bring me problems. Bring me solutions.” I think this is terrible leadership advice. It sounds empowering. Think critically. Take ownership. Don’t just complain. But consider what your team may actually hear: Don’t bring me a problem until you’ve figured it out. And that’s a very different message. Because sometimes the most valuable thing an employee can do is bring you a problem early — before they understand it, before they know how big it is, and definitely before they have a beautifully packaged solution. I don’t want my team deciding whether a problem is “ready enough” for me to know about. I want them thinking: Susan needs to know this. There’s a bigger leadership question hiding underneath this: How easy have you made it for people to bring you bad news? Because your answer tells me far more about your leadership than whether you’ve taught people to arrive with solutions. 👇 Leaders — agree or disagree? Is “bring me solutions, not problems” good leadership advice? Let me know your thoughts.

I believe problems solved through collaboration lead to stronger solutions.

@Susan Throop I agree, I also believe they are trying to build accountability but again, it doesn’t always land.
Are we outsourcing Leadership
We will be live Friday September 4th @ 8:30 AM live. AI can write the email, summarize the meeting, analyze the data, create the plan, and even recommend what you should do next. But can it lead? On this episode of Unified Leadership, Coach Timothy T.O. Clay and Sifu Rafael ask a question every leader needs to consider: Are we using technology to become better leaders, or are we slowly outsourcing the very things that make us leaders? There is nothing wrong with using AI. We use it. The question is what happens when we stop using it as a tool and start allowing it to replace our judgment, communication, creativity, intuition, and ability to think for ourselves. Here are some questions to think about Are leaders becoming better communicators, or simply producing more communication? Are we using AI to prepare for difficult conversations instead of learning how to have them? If AI recommends a decision that affects your people, who takes responsibility for the outcome? And as technology becomes more capable, what leadership skills become even more important? If you remove the technology, the title, the systems, the scripts, and all the tools around you, can you still lead people? I can’t wait to watch it on YouTube.
Emotions feel inefficient. They feel irrational. But.........
But here's what I've learned: the emotions you're avoiding are exactly where your growth lives. That frustration with your team? It's not about them. It's pointing to something you need to communicate or clarify. That anxiety before a big ask? It's not a sign you're not ready. It's information about your own beliefs about your worth. That resentment you're feeling? It's telling you that you've overcommitted or misaligned with your values. Your emotions aren't the problem. They're the data. When you develop emotional awareness, you make better decisions. You communicate more clearly. You lead with more integrity. You know what you actually want versus what you think you should want. You build teams that aren't held together by your force of will, but by real connection and shared values. The most effective leaders I know aren't the ones who ignore their emotions. They're the ones who can feel them, understand what they're signaling, and make conscious choices based on that information. This is the work underneath sustainable business growth. What emotion has been showing up for you lately that you've been trying to push past? What might it be trying to tell you?

Emotions are absolutely data. Not just your own emotions—the emotions other people bring into the room matter, too. I agree with a previous post that emotions aren’t the whole picture. They’re the tip of the iceberg. The key is to use those emotions as a cue to look below the surface. Is your anxiety really about the situation or is it a fear of rejection? Is your anger really about the person in front of you—or are you exhausted and overworked? Is their defensiveness about your message or are they feeling threatened, unheard, or misunderstood? Emotions give us information. They don’t always give us the answer. Pause. Get curious. Look below the surface. That’s where the real understanding begins.
