Day 210: My Birthday πŸŽ‚
It's my birthday today, and also a Wednesday which means we have IGP training tomorrow. Which fellow 66er @Jenna Owen is joining us for! Exciting. We started today by taking Onyx and Lupe to the beach. It's Lupe's first time although I think we could have been anywhere they just like running around together. Onyx got absolutely covered in wet sand and they walked back to the car mostly just playing tug with each other. I got my training in with a short indication session with Lupe. We are up to 10 second indications but I'm boomeranging criteria to keep him engaged. Now off to the steak restaurant for dinner!

Happy birthday!
Day 174: Fully Locked-In πŸ”
Yesterday I posted about how I have an idea for how to teach IGP tracking that as far as I'm aware hasn't been done before. However, I had reservations to commit to it because what do I know? Am I so zealous as to think I can go a different way than everyone else and succeed? Well yes, turns out I am πŸ˜‚ I spent some time yesterday researching. I read all of the IGP tracking rules, watched all of a course relating to ideas I'm borrowing from and decided I'm going to go for it. Today I contacted a friend with a lot of experience in this style of training (not an IGP trainer) and she has agreed to help me too. In terms of today's training I started with increasing the duration on the down stays and then did some more search development stuff. Just holding him back, throwing the toy into the bushes and then sending him to find it. He's barely done anything like this before so I'm just introducing him to searching right now. I also did a tiny bit of heeling and rewarding with the toy instead of food and then practicing the outs at the same time... and one rep of 'Drop' to finish the session. I'm breaking the mould. Wish me luck πŸ™ I told Alex he said I will need it πŸ˜‚

I'd love to hear more about your progress with this!
To Neuter or Not To Neuter? That is the question.
I just came across this really cool article. It's aimed at vets so it's a bit geeky but I thought you all might like it. It's interesting to see the culture changing here in Europe. More and more vets are either delaying neutering until later or not recommending it unless there is a reason to do so. My understanding is this is not true in the United States yet. What's your take? What choice have you made for your own dogs? It's a tricky issue. Having worked in rescue in the past where you get endless gluts of dogs from accidental litters, or people just breeding their pets, I can understand the drive for population control, but I think we have options now such as vasectomy or keyhole spay which can make dogs infertile but keep their hormones. Though sometimes neutering can help behaviourally. I had my previous dog castrated on principal as his temperament wasn't great and didn't want to use him for breeding, but I think it made his dog social skills worse so I regretted it. No other notable health issues came with it. My current dog I had wanted not to neuter him at all but he has a retained testicle. I haven't made up my mind what to do exactly. He's had chemical castration for a test run and now it's fading I feel like his dog reactivity is also fading with it - but unsure if that's hormones or just maturity - or maybe even my training. πŸ˜… You can leave a retained testicle but it's a potential cancer risk long term, or can become twisted. I'd like to leave him with his descended testicle intact and have the undescended one removed, I think, but most vets would rather remove both. I didn't want this problem but I have it so... now he's coming up 3, I'll probably have to think about doing something in the next few years. I know people who have had cryptorchid dogs neutered and they've been fine, but have also spoke to people who had their dog's missing testicle removed only and they've been happy with he result as well. There's no right answer! 🀷

Also a question that I keep pondering: I feel like the culture isn't changing in other domestic animals like it is in dogs. Take horses for example. No one as far as I can tell Is fighting to stop people gelding colts. Is it that we are in a better position to manage entire dogs now, but not entire horses, entire rabbits, entire cats (cats are a whole other problem population-wise, let's face it). Are other animals too inconvenient to leave intact? Surely it's not only dogs that have potential adverse affects? Just a thought, though perhaps a bit off topic.
Reuben Day 77
Practiced some send aways around trees (to stand in for hides for IGP). He's way off needing to do this but it's fun to practice. I chained a couple together but noticed he really struggles with directions and gets confused where he's meant to go, so I need to have a think about how to make it clear where I'm pointing - and probably reduce my distance from the object I'm pointing him around. Also did a bit of grooming at home, nothing massively structured but needed to get that mane looking a little less wild. 🀦
