The joke: Someone ripped the 5th month out of my new calendar. I'm dismayed. The breakdown: - The 5th month of the year is May. - If someone ripped May out of the calendar, then May is gone. - “Dismayed” sounds like “dis-Mayed”, which can be understood as “without May.” So the joke works in two ways: 1. Normal meaning: “I’m dismayed” = “I’m upset, disappointed, or worried because something bad, unexpected, or frustrating happened. 2. Hidden joke meaning: “I’m dis-Mayed” = “I’m without May.”
