Busy Farm life
Sorry I haven't been active in this group lately, but it's been an incredibly busy season on the farm! We've been deep into sowing season, getting all our crops planted for the year ahead. Just finished up sheep shearing too – always a challenging but rewarding time with our flock. I'm also excited to share that I've recently published my book "A Practical Guide to Sustainable Living: Introduction to Permaculture" which is now available on Amazon! It's been a long project in the making, and I'm thrilled to finally have it out there for fellow sustainable living enthusiasts. We've also had the pleasure of hosting a couple of WWOOFers who've been fantastic help with farm duties. There's nothing quite like having eager hands to share the workload and passionate people to exchange knowledge with. Between all that, I've been working on updating our farm website to better showcase what we do here, and now we're in full production mode for our preserves – making jams, chutneys, sun-dried tomatoes, and drying herbs from our garden harvest. Looking ahead, we're planning to start slaughtering the pigs by the end of September so we can get back into our cured meat production. It's always bittersweet but such an important part of our farm-to-table operation. Thanks for your patience with my absence – hoping to be more active here as things settle into autumn rhythm. Would love to catch up on what everyone else has been up to on their homesteads!

@Jim Flach No, I don't grow anything specifically for compost. Instead, I use a balanced mix of greens, wood chips, and cardboard. All our food waste goes to our animals, except for bones which we bury directly in the soil.

Hey still here just super busy
Garden Progress!
My first year growing veggies has been awesome! The overall picture is a few weeks old, and the tomatoes are a lot bigger. I harvested about half of my potatoes yesterday, a bunch of greens (I lost a lot to buggies and possibly rabbits), a couple of jalapenos and some beets. I have green tomatoes on all of my tomato plants, peppers on all of my pepper plants, and flowers on the others. Plus, 3 of the 6 asparagus crowns came up! How likely is it that the other 3 might come up eventually? One of the crowns that sprouted took about 9 weeks to poke above the soil.

@JoAnne LaRocque if you have potatoes sow lavander and marigolds. Best companions for potatoes as they repel pests.
Farm Animals
Anyone raises farm animals? If yes what do you raise? If no, why?

@Yvette De Maria During winter, after the cultivation season concludes, we utilize our livestock to naturally enhance soil quality. We allow our hens, sheep, geese, and ducks to graze freely across the fields. The hens contribute by scratching and aerating the soil while providing natural fertilization. Meanwhile, the geese, ducks, and sheep consume any remaining vegetation and grasses, simultaneously enriching the soil with their manure.

@Jim Flach we have loads of earth worms in the soil actually that is why I never took worming seriously. We also use a no till procedure by just using a broad fork.
Hello everyone!
I'm Elle, originally from the beautiful island of Malta, but I've found my home in Bina, Slovakia where I run Country Comfort Farma. 🌱 What I'm about: I'm passionate about sustainable living and permaculture, and I've had the privilege of sharing this journey through my book "A Practical Guide to Sustainable Living: Introduction to Permaculture." 🚜 My world: At Country Comfort Farma, I get to live and breathe the principles I write about - from regenerative farming practices to creating self-sustaining ecosystems that work in harmony with nature. We're proud to be affiliated with WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms), welcoming volunteers who want to experience sustainable farming firsthand while contributing to our mission. ✨ Why I'm here: I believe the best ideas grow when we share them with each other. I'm excited to connect with like-minded souls, exchange experiences, learn from your journeys, and together explore new ways to live more sustainably and mindfully. Whether you're just starting your sustainable living journey, you're a seasoned permaculture practitioner, or you're simply curious about what it means to live in better harmony with our planet, I'd love to hear from you! Let's grow, learn, and evolve together.

@Jim Flach To me, permaculture is working with nature and not against it.

@Dennis Wichter unfortunately yes, last year we lost everything due to a storm cell, but giving up was not the solution but starting from scratch was. Luckily no animals were harmed. This year here in Slovakia, Hungary and Germany we had foot and mouth disease so they was very concerning but it seems to be over now.
