I fixed my AC by watching your YouTube
I've watched a lot of your HVAC videos. I've learned so much from your channel that I now feel confident I could replace an entire AC system myself—and do it the right way. When I inspected the original system that came with my house, I discovered it didn't even have a filter drier installed. Amazingly, it still worked for more than 25 years. Eventually, it developed a refrigerant leak because the liquid line was rubbing against the brick where it exited the house due to vibration. I was able to repair the leak and install a filter drier because of what I learned from your videos. I really appreciate your enthusiasm for teaching and the time you put into creating such educational content. Keep up the great work!

Love the channel..I am a DIYer but have not attempted replacing a system/unit so my question is i have a 15 year old Lennox. Still cools here in hot Georgia but where do I need to begin when this thing starts to give up the ghost? Appreciate any input....

Or there are several that you can find under the air conditioner replacement playlist over on our YouTube channel. So I’d recommend watching as many replacement videos to get a good idea of what is involved and what tools you will need. Condensing unit troubles
Hi, we have a situation with our 8 yr old ac unit. It stopped cooling and I called an older hvac technician that we had used on another property. He came out and looked at the condensing unit and said the caps were loose on the high /low lines and as a result we lost most of the freon. We paid $800 for the freon and trip charge. Well about a week and a half later it quit cooling again. (We are in Dallas in the midst of a heat wave) We called him out again and he said the board red light code said the board is bad. He ordered a new board and came out again to install it. Then it had a yellow code I think, and this is where it gets murky, I don't really know what the reason is (I'm not sure he knew either) Anyway apparently the unit is low on freon again and he said there must be a leak somewhere. So Wednesday 7/29 he's supposed to come again and put dye in the line and try to find the leak, but we will have to pay for more freon - potentially another $800 which we don't really have because we've lost our main jobs and are doing side gigs to pay bills. Shouldn't he have checked the lines with the dye the first time to cover all the leak possibilities? to avoid this thing from happening. We think he should refill the freon on his dime from his negligence to check all possibilities the first time instead of assuming just the caps were at fault? We'll be happy to work with him for his time (he charges very reasonably), but freon is horribly expensive. What do you think? We thought about calling out the company that originally installed it because the parts are still under warranty, be he said their labor cost would be 3-4x his labor cost and therefore still more expensive. But there is trust lost from them leaving the caps loose to speed up a freon call back.

Wow, I'm so sorry you are dealing with this! Of course HE would say their labor will be 3-4x his labor 🤦🏻‍♂️ I would absolutely try and call the original company as it is still under warranty. It doesnt matter if his labor is less if he has come back what 3 times at this point? It sounds like you need to get a second opinion on this. I'm so sorry! Somethings thats the way it goes though. @Matt O'Brien If the cores are leaking a bit, you can leave the caps loose intentionally for sure. I've seen it happen before. Let us know what you find with this so it might help others in the future!
AC replacement permitting - things to watch out for
I know, why do a construction permit? Well, I live in NJ, and things get tricky when trying to sell. My permit was easily approved (I gave them my EPA 608 cert), but now I want to know what the inspector will be looking for during inspection. I also want to do it right. I am replacing my 28 year old 2.5 ton central AC condenser and evaporator only with a new heat pump setup. Since I have extra solar electric available, I want it to heat my home using the heat pump, keeping the propane as backup for the really cold nights. Keeping the older propane furnace in place as my air handler. I will install a dual fuel board from Goodman, as well as the Firefly R32 leak monitoring. New unit will also be 2.5 ton single speed as this has worked well for me. What will the inspector be looking for? I'm guessing I will have to downsize my 30 amp 2 pole breaker to be no larger than the new units spec for "Max. Overcurrent Protection" (which is 25). Will they be looking for matching AHRI Certificate? What else, or other tips to share for inspection?

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. I'm excited for you! To answer your question, yes the breaker size will definitely be inspected and most likely wire size that matches the breaker limits. Also where wiring is exposed that it is properly weatherproofed with conduit. One thing to note there is its against NEC to run low voltage and high voltage in the same conduit so keep that in mind. Disconnect or breaker should be within 6' of the condensing unit. Also no wiring going into the furnace without some sort of bushing to protect it from rubbing through the wire insulation. More than likely, they will want to make sure the unit is the proper distance from electrical panels and gas meters. So check your installation guide on that for proper distancing. For your furnace, probably the following: Sediment trap (drip leg) Updated quarter turn shutoff valve Approved flexible connector Proper distance on your exhaust venting depending on if it is an 80% or 96% furnace These are the main things, but each inspector is different. I literally had an inspector once say, "so show me what we are looking at here" haha i really had to bite my tongue and not say "well you see, these air DUCTS and air flows through them" 😅🤦🏻‍♂️ If you do everything properly i'm sure you will be fine, and worst case if you need to change something, you can. See picture - both lines drop water when AC is running. Any ideas on what the cause is or is this normal? Any suggestions on what do about this? Thanks

Totally normal. Especially in humid areas. Make sure all of the suction line is insulated all the way into the case, with no gaps anywhere otherwise they will sweat. And then if it sweats it will drain into the pan inside the coil cabinet. Hope this helps. Best, Dave

@Pablo Martincorena https://amzn.to/4hEBy5I this is what i would use. It has an adhesive also. So you could cut back your existing stuff some and the once the adhesive is on at the beginning part hopefully you can stuff it in the hole on the cabinet. Best, Dave
