Using imagery allows the athlete to "see" themselves in the competitive situation so they are more relaxed because they would have already "been there". Controlled breathing and self-talk cues (I call them "action thoughts") encourage staying in the moment and can also aid in allowing the athlete to not dwell on in-game mistakes.
