Questions about spent mushroom substrate
Hey, y'all! I've been a bit absent lately, and I'm really sorry, but I've been BUSY! Stumbled across a BIG business opportunity and am working diligently on getting everything together to make it happen. BUT, in amongst my stumbling, I met a mushroom farmer interested in bartering spent substrate for finished worm castings. At first I didn't want her composted substrate because she said she finds worms in it all the time and I don't want to introduce them into my vermiculture system. But then again, my garden soil needs all the help it can get with introducing fungal mediums. Would this be a good addition? If so, how much should I add? And as food for the worms, I would prefer spent substrate not composted yet so I could pre-compost in a controlled environment before feeding to my worm employees, which in turn should make my castings more fungally dominant. Right? I hear they LOVE it! Input? Suggestions?
Kinda FAT!
Planted asparagus last year and let them grow all year.... Couple are starting coming up. As thick as my finger! Hope I get a good harvest. 🀞

Who is starting seeds?
For the lower USA, it's time to get things going. When will you start your seeds? If you don't know when to start check your zone here and then check your almanac here

I'm so behind the 8-ball right now. I need to go through my inventory to see what else I need today, get them started this weekend, while also expanding my next rotation of breeder bins and resetting the others. And research. I have some sit down & figure it out stuff to do - all with a kiddo at home on a long weekend school break.

@Dennis Wichter It was fun! A bit strange at times, but fun! LOL I was going to finish it up with the "wart chorus" singing a song, but wasn't sure if posting back-to-back was allowed. LOL

@Dennis Wichter I do too. It was a challenge! LOL
High tunnel? What?
Looks like over 3 years and using nitrogen fixers they improved their yield and I would assume their soil too. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/research-shows-promising-results-increasingly-104551736.html Just by using a high tunnel. I don't have space for one, do you?

@Jim Flach Completely correct, especially the $$$ part!! I was actually gonna gonna try to talk hubs into adding on a greenhouse set-up on the back side of the house. My little stand-up greenhouse that I anchored to the ground back there has managed to handle several storms there. I saw a video one time about someone who got one of those big greenhouses from Tractor Supply and stabilized it with a bunch of different hardware than what it came with to be able to withstand storms. I was thinking about doing that, maybe getting a couple of them over time, but I still run the same risk in severe weather.

@Jim Flach Our weather can really be ridiculous. Just this morning, we had a horrific fire & brimstone storm come plowing through. I think it was MS that had tornadoes from this storm? No damage here, but you just always have to be prepared.

I've been an avid food gardener for over 15 years, and an active worm farmer for 5. I currently raise European Nightcrawlers and LOVE them!
