It gave language to something I’ve been sensing for a while, especially the way attention can slowly gather around one person and turn them into a kind of center of gravity for the group. What I keep coming back to, though, is that understanding the pattern still doesn’t really tell us what to do about it. That’s the part that always leaves me wanting more. If this is such a natural tendency, then awareness alone doesn’t seem to be enough. Sometimes it feels like we just get better at recognizing the pattern while still getting pulled along by it. I’ve been wondering whether part of the issue is that people often come into community mostly hoping to get something from it, rather than coming in ready to help build it. Not in a performative way, just in the simple sense of bringing something to the table, engaging honestly, asking real questions, sharing thoughts, being willing to challenge and be challenged, and helping shape the tone of the space together. I’m also noticing how easy it is to talk about these dynamics as if they only live out there in other people, while still getting caught in them myself. Wanting openness, but also wanting comfort. Wanting truth, but not always enjoying the friction that can come with it. Part of me also wonders if what you’re describing is something every group naturally drifts toward if it’s left on its own. I’ll admit I feel some resistance to that—not because I think it’s easy to avoid, but because stopping there starts to feel like we’re just pointing at the fire without talking about how to manage it. Maybe the more useful question is what actually helps counter that drift in practice, even if it’s ongoing and imperfect. For example, what would it look like to build in small counterweights from the start—like encouraging contribution over consumption, making space for disagreement on purpose, or rotating who holds the center of attention so it doesn’t settle in one place? This group is still really new, and I think we’re all still feeling out what it could become. That takes time, and I do think patience matters. At the same time, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little concern about how easy it is for any group to slip into these patterns early on.

agreed. I’ve learned there’s no escaping what you have lived through. There is only accepting what is true and choosing what comes next.

I think I experience that movement through art first. Sometimes something shifts in me before I have language for it, and making something is how I begin giving it voice.
