Why We Celebrate Independence Day The Way We Do
In a July 3, 1776 letter to his wife Abigail, John Adams envisioned Independence Day being celebrated annually. "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not." Before we truly began the War for American Independence, our Founders knew what laid in store for them. And they told us how they wanted us to remember it: annually, with great festivals, shows, solemnity, tradition, parades, shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and fireworks. Even though we did not possess the entire Continent, they envisioned we would one day. https://www.masshist.org/digitaladams/archive/doc?id=L17760703jasecond

@Shauna Starcher I do, too. I think what is most surprising to me was Adams' assumption that our country would expand to the entire continent

Happy Independence Day 🦅🇺🇸
250 years ago the American people refused subjugation and won their freedom. On this Independence Day we celebrate your victory and the unapologetic stand for liberty that created the United States. The Iranian people are now making the same choice. We extend our solidarity and friendship to America as we fight for a free Iran that will one day stand proudly beside you.
Happy Independence Day 🦅🇺🇸

So much of our Declaration of Independence parallels the Iranian people's plight in Iran. "...But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security..." It is not only the RIGHT but the DUTY of people to throw off despotic governments in the view of the ideals of the Enlightenment Period (natural rights) https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript

@Danial Mahdavi I actually do know Iranian history fairly well as I started learning it on my own a few years ago, for some reason. In December I started to realize why. 🙂

July 5th reminds us there is still much work to be done.
On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration and asked, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Douglass was a powerful orator, often traveling six months out of the year to give lectures on abolition. His speech, given at an event commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was held at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York. It was a scathing speech in which Douglass stated, “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine, You may rejoice, I must mourn.” https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/nations-story-what-slave-fourth-july What is the 4th of July to a group of white supremacists? https://youtube.com/shorts/tZS-8SgGv-E?si=cYKlwj6QX3VYZvV5

I love Frederick Douglass. I would be monitoring the SPLC Fraud Indictment case for connections to Patriot Front and founder Thomas Rousseau (ironic last name)

🚨 JUST IN: A shocking new poll for Democrats just found Republicans SURGE +11 NET POINTS among Hispanics for the 2026 midterms, now leading 48%-43% — McLaughlin This makes Texas EVEN MORE difficult for Democrats to win the Senate seat 🔥 Keep pushing! Secure our elections = WE CAN WIN THE HOUSE https://x.com/ericldaugh/status/2073078796316459337?s=46&t=gT6uLhaVod8uwzT4p6povA

As I've been saying on repeat: Americans don't pay attention to midterms politics until after summer break is over, the kids return to school and life returns to normal. For us here in TX that's August. We WILL be competing for their attention with football, so it's really important we have as many one-on-one conversations as possible. Seeing this upswing tells me the Communism push is making the news cycle in such a large way it's breaking through summer busy time and catching attention, so I'm not surprised. Expect this to keep climbing as we get closer to midterms

@Danial Mahdavi If the Democrat National party were to back more moderates like Fetterman, they would be able to give the Republican National party a run for their money
