My Learning Journey So Far… (Vocal Focused/VIP Subscription)
I plan to use this simply as a public journal. My notes will heavily focus on what I find most interesting and pertinent to the music I’m producing, which is focused mostly on vocals, with piano accompaniment (maybe sometimes Ukulele, if I can figure out how to record my daughter playing it). Because of that, I will still go through the lessons focused on other things (like drums, and stuff), but will not likely have many (if any) notes about that stuff (so NOT comprehensive). I also have the VIP Subscription, so this may have notes on stuff you do not yet have access to (which may or may not be confusing—I don’t know). Please also note that I don’t promise that my notes will be completely accurate, as I may not fully understand something when I make a note about it. Completed courses: - Start Here (Premium & VIP) - Intro to Small/Home Studio - Check-In Booking & Replay Links - Major DAW Tutorials: Logic Quickstart Next courses: - Logic Pro 11 Complete Tutorial - Vocal Intensive - Music Production 101 - Music Production 102 Later maybe (I don’t know yet): - NYC Recording Masterclass - NYC Mixing Masterclass - Mixing with Stock Plugins - How to Use an Equalizer - How to Use Compression - How to Use Reverb - How to Mix Like a Pro - How to Master Your Music - Cheat Sheets & Resources - Mixing & Mastering Cheat Sheets - Event Replays - Music Production for Beginners [NOTE: focused on producing beats, according to Luke Despain. Not likely I’ll use that.] - How to Produce Modern Pop

NOTES ON “Check-In Booking & Reply Links” Course Booking Link - !!! USE IT !!! General Info 1. Before booking, it would be wise to go through some of the courses and take notes, and jot down questions, but don’t wait until the month is over (which would be a waste). 2. Make sure to book a session every month and have questions prepared so the mentor can guide you properly!!! 3. Don’t worry too much about spending a lot of time taking notes DURING the session (short, quick notes is fine), because you can watch your session again later to take review and take better notes. Use your time during the session to engage with the mentor and glean all the good wisdom and knowledge you can to further your own learning and skills. 4. Email: [email protected] Replays 1. Can watch other people’s mentoring sessions, past events, etc. [IMPORTANT NOTE: the link is to a spreadsheet, and is divided into categories in the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet: Events, DAW Calls, Mentor Calls, Town Halls. So if you’re having a difficult time finding your call, then maybe you’re in the wrong tab!] 2. It is possible to play the videos at x2 speed, and even to watch only the highlights. 3. ALWAYS watch your own mentoring sessions to review and take better notes. 4. The link to your mentoring session replay may also have helpful notes written out for you to take the next steps in your learning journey (mine did, and I just recently found out about it). [IMPORTANT NOTE: the session notes did not display for me on my phone, only on my computer, so best to check the link out on your computer.]

NOTES ON “Major DAW Tutorials: Logic Quickstart” COURSE Session Prep 1. Similar to the setup stuff in “Intro to Small/Home Studio” course. Still worth the watch (only 5 minutes long). Midi Programing 1. Open the editor by pressing E or by double clicking on a MIDI track or by clicking on the editor button at the top left of logic. 2. Midi notes can be programmed, edited, deleted, etc. within Logic Pro without the need use the electric piano to replay and rerecord the area in question. NICE! 3. Use command click tool for better workflow while editing. Programming Drums 1. Velocity (the “hardness” of the notes) can be changed! Awesome! (This applies to piano too, even though this lesson is focused on drums.) 2. Holding shift and clicking adds to selection so you can edit many notes at once. Recording MIDI 1. Time Quantize (classic) tool in the Editor can be used to snap notes to proper timing (careful with this, as you may not want to be too robotic). Recording Audio 1. Option C opens a color window to color code your tracks! 2. Command T splits the selected track at the playhead. Comping and Editing 1. Comping = creating composite tracks = creating take folders. 1.1. Enable “Create Take Folder” (Logic Pro -> Settings -> General -> Overlapping Track Recordings -> set all cycle off and cycle on fields to “Create Take Folder”) 1.2. Record over a track to make takes (without deleting the first recording). 1.3. Click and drag to select which parts of each take you want to be used. 2. Enable “Fade tool click zones” (Logic Pro -> Settings -> General -> Editing) 2.1. Click and drag the top corners of a region to create fade. (Regular fade at the end of a region, or a cross fade where two regions meet.) 2.2. Fades are effective for removing small clicks! Mixer Window 1. Command 2 to open mixer WINDOW, or X to open mixer below tracks. 2. Change I/O Buffer Size to 1024 for smoother mixing (Logic Pro -> Settings -> Audio) 3. Hold Option and click fader or panner to reset to 0. 4. Plugins can be moved from one channel to another by dragging (hold Option to copy it with its settings instead of moving it).

Had my first mentoring session yesterday with Luke Despain. He was extremely helpful. I know the route I plan to take after finishing the Logic Pro course. He also helped me to realize that I was making a mistake by indiscriminately using the EQ presets without fully understanding them. I mixed a song (not the one I showed him) and used Classic Vocal EQ on all the vocals, which did sound better when I played the tracks solo but together it sounded very muddled and I didn’t realize it was because of the EQ, so after taking it all off the song sounds much better (I might add EQ later after I understand how to do so properly, but for now I’ll just keep it simple).
⚠️ GUEST Q&A: Bob Horn! ⚠️
This Friday, the 5th December, at 4pm EST/9pm GMT, Bob Horn will be joining us for a Q&A! Bob is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning mixing engineer who’s mixed songs for some of the recording industry’s most notable artists, including Usher, Timbaland, Michael Jackson, Akon, Macy Gray, Ne-Yo, Lupe Fiasco, Brandy, and many others. This is an amazing opportunity to ask questions and hear directly from someone with incredible experience in the industry. The zoom link is in the calendar! Please note: This event is for Premium and VIP members only. Learn more here: https://courses.mastering.com/membership_info_skool

Open or Closed
Ok time for next query. Closed, open and ( for me unknown until today ) half-open back. Talking about Studio (HP) headphones. I have always used closed back HPs. But recently one of my friends told me that U do have to use open back to hear the stereo information. I do not use headphones to hear that, I do use headphones to isolate what in a track i don't like (over and over on repeat). But it maybe sounds true for anyone only using HPs mixing, mastering. So whats your take on this topic, open or closed ? and for that matter on, in or over ?( for me the only alternative is over) and now to the reason for this post. I have some very comfortable AKGs, so comfortable that I forget to take the off when fetching coffee, making it time to switch. What is your favorit HPs model and brand? Best Regards P-G

@Garry Simmons Thank you! I have been looking for a good pair of closed headphones for less than $100 to wear while recording vocals, so I think I'll go with the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO.
Music links
If you want to share a link to a new release or anything else music related, please post it in this thread. Thanks!

https://on.soundcloud.com/qaUM68bv6PFDoCe7QO This is the first recording I've done. It's not released to the public yet as we've not finished the album yet and I want to release it all together. In fact, outside of a few close friends, this is the only place I've shared it. All criticism is very welcome (be brutally honest with me).
