Training drills
Hi. I’m coaching u11 girls team. Is there a drill you guys run teaching kids how to spread out during a game and running leads. We practice it at training but come game day it’s all bunched. Is there a drill you guys could help with or is it just the old scenario of repetitively running the same drill until it sinks in?

Hi Shane, What I've done for some of my kids that I coach is have different coloured cones set out for each player at the start and finish and have them in the spacing required. Start off with straight lines so they can get the idea of where to set them selves in a contest and so they can judge their distance they need to be. Eg: player 1 is on the red cone and that may be 5m off the contest then in the distance there is another red cone in a straight line still with that 5m spacing, tell that player to run towards that cone so they have a reference point and can help correct/guide them with the spacing. Another player will be on a blue cone (could be 12m off contest) and same thing as above. This also works for when trying to get them to spread out during a game and also leading patterns (have each start on a coloured cone then they have to run to their corresponding coloured cone - which you've set up to get the spread right). I found repetition works pretty good if you use the same concept but change up the drills so you aren't doing the same 3 drills every training. The other thing I've found works for some players is when that player gets to the right position/spreads out where they should or run the correct lines that you've worked on in a game, ill send the runner out to say we'll done and I bring it up at the breaks and heap them with praise about doing what we've worked on. For some kids this makes it click and they will then do it more regularly and then the other kids seem to want to follow suit. Hope this helps 👍
Rotations and benches
Hi all, For the other coaches out there in scoring grades how do you go managing rotations with the bench? Do you have set players in key positions (like a CHB) who would play the whole game or do you rotate everyone regardless of where they play? Also what have you done so that your players don't think of the bench as punishment and instead it's a tool to help? Cheers

Wet weather drills
Hi Everyone Can anyone give me any examples of what you do for wet weather drills. Its wet here in Qld right now, but the girls team obviously need to know how to play a different game in the wet weather as its not gong to be dry all the time. Any hints or tips on what some of you experienced coaches do would be great.

Hi @Shane McDonnell Only just saw this post but one drill I do with my boys I coach is called the southern star. I'll attach the rough picture that I've drawn on the phone but it basically has 4 groups on the out side (marked X) and 4 on the inside (marked O). The group O only has one person on the cone with the rest spread out evenly between the X group. The ball starts at the out side which is rolled along the ground towards group O (Yellow line). Who picks it up off the ground and hand balls to the group X at 90° to them (Blue line). That person then rolls it along the ground to the next group who does the eact same thing to the next group, the exercise keeps going on in that same direction. Person goes to the group where they gave the ball to. You can go clockwise then anti clockwise after a bit or vice versa. It's a good way to get the kids to learn to put their body behind the ball and to pick it up off the ground because that's where most people will pick it up from if it's wet as the ball will slip more often than not. To make it easy when you start get them to roll the ball in nicely so it should go pretty straight to help them get the use of it. If you have the numbers you can chuck in multiple balls so they have to be switched on to what's happening around them. Hope this makes sense mate
🆓Free Program for the first 5 people
I have just put together The Exact 4-Week Schedule to Build Explosive Athleticism Without Overtraining, and would like your feedback on it. So I will give it to you for free if you are willing to tell me what you think of it, and are one of the first 5 people to comment "yes please" below. Best regards Josh

Would love to see a torp tutorial! Even the other type of kicks from bananas to dribblers through the goals.

Also maybe what you do/how you block out the noise when having set shots on goals. I think that would help some younger kids focus on their kick at goals when they are trying to establish a routine that works for them.
