SOTD: The One Edp by Dolce & Gabanna 11/01/2026
Undoubtedly one of the best romantic and date-night fragrances in the designer world. I had this on my list last year and managed to pick it up just in the nick of time. This one real eased back in 2015 was created by Olivier Polge, the son of legendary perfumer Jacques Polge, who served as Chanel's in-house perfumer for 37 years, Oliver seems to have taken over this role from his father and has quite a few big releases under his belt. Like many of the fragrances that I'm drawn to this is a woody/Spicey Oriental. Normally an edp would provide an acceptable amount of performance, but as most know, this is were The One falls down, despite its depth and richness. The opening is a slightly bitter and aromati. The grapefruit provides a clean, zesty edge, which is quickly balanced by the herby green spiciness of the coriander and basil. This sets a fresh-spicy tone. The heart is where the warmth begins. Cardamom, is a key player here providing an intoxicating, sweet, and slightly smoky spice, paired with a kick of fresh ginger. The orange blossom adds a subtle, floral sweetness that grounds the spices, preventing them from becoming too sharp. The dry-down is the best part. Its a warm, sensual blend. The rich vanilla-like sweetness of the Amber is dominant, which is complemented by a smooth, smoky accord from the Tobacco leaf. Not cigarette smoke, more like a sweet, pipe-tobacco. Cedar wood gives a final touch of dry woodiness. This is an extremely warm comforting, luxurious fragrance. Thanks too the beautiful balance, transitioning from a fresh spice to a warm, ambery, tobacco-infused dry-down. It's only fault is it's performance, but for many, this guy included the scent more than makes up for its failings. Performance is moderate at best, it only lasts about 4 hrs on my skin at best. Projects softly for the first hour or two, then needs to be topped up. Definitely an intimate fragrance. Perhaps this is what it's creator was aiming for? Best for the Autumn/Winter months although it would work well on a cool spring evening. IMO it's still worth having in any collection
