Adjusting. Translating. Softening certain parts. Explaining others. In one room she’s too much of one thing. In the next she’s not enough of it. She understands exactly why everyone sees her the way they do, but nobody seems to understand what it feels like to be her. After a while she stops trying to explain it. She carries the contradiction alone because she’s never met anyone who had words for it. After: She sits through the green light without noticing it changed because she so lost in thought and time . how did this song says the thing she’s been trying to explain her entire life but could never make people fully understand? The feeling of editing herself in real time depending on who was in the room. Laughing softer here. Speaking clearer there. Trying not to sound “too Black” in one space and trying not to sound “too different” in another. Realizing at some point she became fluent in reading everyone else before anyone ever learned how to read her. the song ends.
