I love my GALS
I love my gals (Chickens), but I do find them very testing at times. I had a real challenge integrating a new flock with the old gals. It put my patience to the TEST! So much so, I am making my next video about it!

@Steve Thomas I bought crow collars for my roosters when I was breeding. A hens song after laying an egg was louder than the rooster. Some roosters could only get the first bit out but nothing else

Welcome Shirley. A great way to get seeds and swap seeds is if you have a local community garden. I get the ones I don’t seed online. They usually have gmo and non gmo on offer. There’s a few companies in Australia who sell. I used to go through Eden Seeds in Tasmania but for the last few years I’ve used Happy Valley Seeds

Repurpose a Compost Tumbler & how to use it!
Hey gardeners, I picked up this tumbler from marketplace and bought it home. Dave (my partner) spray painted it black, then red once it was dried. He placed a few bolts in the stands to keep it together but we might have to finish drilling the holes as there are no nuts on the bolts as it doesn’t go all the way through. I put the drum on the stand this morning before it got too hot. I added some washers to both sides of the bolt. Now it works a treat and I raked up all the leaves and placed them inside….as we have had so much wind lately. My question is: how do I start the compost process in the tumbler? What should I add? How much of each item should I add? Thanks for your assistance 👍

This is how I use mine. Not sure if it’s how they were intended but it’s how it works best for me. Mine sits out in the yard beside my 6 foot fence where it gets plenty of sun. I use the sun to generate the heat and only turn twice a week. I first fill halfway with whatever I have on hand, making sure I go up the sides a little extra creating a slight well shape in the centre. Then I add the leaves I’ve run over twice with the mower/Sugarcane mulch/Baled hay or straw/Lawn clippings that have had a couple months to fully dry out. I spread half a bucket of soil making sure it’s contained within the well shape. Over that 1 cup of blood and bone. Used coffee grounds can be a good substitute for blood and bone. Then add whatever kitchen scraps you have. I’ve always got extra that I bag and freeze each night. You can also cook 2 cups of rice if you don’t think you have enough greens. Top up the outside walls with more browns if needed so when you add the last half a bucket of soil over the scraps it’s still within the well shape. Cover everything over with the mulch to 3/4 of the bin, allowing room for another dampening. Remember at this stage less is best as the central ingredients usually create a little bit of moisture. Lastly I fill the whole rest of the cavity with mulch fairly tight. First sit I leave for 7 days. After that I give it a good spin twice a week while monitoring the moisture and decomposition. Some weeks it may need a little moisture and other times some more browns. When you’ve dialed in the process, don’t add any more ingredients. It’s time to let it cook and break down. Owning a tumbler it’s always handy keeping a bag or clip top rubbish bin of untreated sawdust. Sometimes it can really help lower an accidental wet bin by absorbing moisture and spreading it. Once you understand a tumblers process and don’t overdo the moisture or greens, you can produce some great results. I hope this helps someone’s confidence to create something beautiful 👍

I’ve also got the 80 or 100 litre square compost bin that sits on the ground, plus in the raised garden beds I have some 4 inch PVC pipes with holes drilled under soil level. During vegetable season they get constantly filled with kitchen waste for the 🪱 worms

Brazilian cherry (Eugenia uniflora)
It has taken over 10 years for this tree to set fruit. I am so excited! I'm growing it in a pot like most of my fruit trees. Not sure if it is red or black. It is growing in a semi arid climate near the nsw/Vic border

In the late 90’s I was renting a house that had a Brazilian cherry tree. I’d never seen one before or heard of it. It was fully loaded with little deep red pumpkin looking fruit. Growing up in the bush, 95% or red berries were poisonous. But one day my elderly neighbour yelled out over the fence, every year she picked a couple buckets from the tree to make jam and would I mind if she could keep doing it. I didn’t mind but let her know my concerns. She laughed and told me to try one. I threw one in my mouth and as soon as I bit down I spat it out and ran for the tap to wash it out of my mouth. I fair dinkum thought she was pulling my leg and they were in eatable by the way she’d collapsed on the grass in an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Id never tasted anything like it. Watercress was closer to a cherry than it. Being a close neighbourhood everyone had a laugh for the next couple months, especially since the neighbour could spin a great yarn and beefed the story up a little each time she told it over a couple cool afternoon beverages. To this day if I come across one in season, I’ll snack on half a dozen in memory of my colourful neighbour, even though I’m still not a big fan of the flavour. And yes her jam was pretty bloody good for a poisonous berry 😂😂
