Focussing on planes, profiles and length of face. So these aren't homework, just trying to understand what I'm missing. There are lots more sketches than these but I think these show a bit of progress. And I know I'm still not quite getting it haha. Will pick up again tomorrow with planes part of homework.

@Janet Abrahams hey that's wonderful to hear thank you @Janet Abrahams !
Quick digital colour study
Just something I did while on a train with nothing else going on. Now I'm looking at it again, it feels like the face is too prominent and too warm. To take this further, I'd try to darken the face a little, plus darken more around the head and silhouette of the shoulders to hopefully push them further back. Of course, I could also spend time trying to get a likeness but that wasn't the goal of the exercise. It's interesting to see how chromatic/saturated this kind of material gets. I think the pink feathery stuff transmits light and makes it more intensely colourful. It was also nice to see how colour temperature can tell the story of which planes are facing in which directions. At least it seems to me that the cool blue light tells a story of what faces upwards. Since my train journey finished I could not take it further, and some things like the colour of the jewellery I did not have time to really take a go at. The film is Wittgenstein directed by Derek Jarman by the way.

Great study @Dan Hudson and wanted to second what Chris said about your colour matching. Very motivating to see your process. Can’t wait to get into this, soon (but not yet πŸ˜…). I found your observation about colour temperature telling the story very interesting. I’ll look at Jarman’s films again (I love them). I don’t know who his cinematographer was off-hand. I know Jarman was a painter who loved chroma and wrote about it. I just hadn’t connected that so directly with storytelling, for some reason, until your post and comment πŸ™

@Dan Hudson thanks Dan. Was lucky to see him speak at a couple of his premieres. Back in the day. Yeah if I get the foundation right I hope all else follows 🀞

@Chris Legaspi thank you for pointing this out Chris. I kind of 'go blank' around the length and placing brow/nose chin. I'll do more drawings but could more tracing studies help too? Appreciate this is a long learning curve. Thanks so much for your encouragement. It's taken a few weeks to adjust to producing work in any kind of volume. In the past I've tried something or learned something but then moved on. I have time but also I'm slow and undisciplined, I now recognise this. I was drifting a lot before starting with you. Building my focus and daily routines is at the top of my list. That and covering the miles πŸ˜… Your thoughtful feedback and encouragement are helping me get closer to that. It was your feedback that brought me to you, in fact. Thank you so much!

In person portrait, about 40 minutes. Can see the odd placement and size of things now. That philosophy is still with me! I tried to do a profile in second half and failed so I worked up on the pink sticky note contour instead (no marker hence grainy background). Also I redid a couple of homework study references and played a bit with biro today. Felt a bit hopeful. Not hopping too far ahead, just nice to let loose a bit.
