Ultra-processed food and your brain
In April, we are going to be coaching live in our community here around our Wellness Challenge (as well as our Mindset Mastery Course, so stay tuned!) - which is focused on eating whole foods and removing processed foods. When we make this change, we know the impact on our overall health is remarkable! What about brain health in particular? I see more people every day struggling with cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer's and we know these are lifestyle-related conditions. And they can be brutal. A connection of mine on LinkedIn, who is also a neuropsychiatrist, shared this and I knew I needed to share it here: "A study of nearly 72,000 adults found that getting more than 20% of daily calories from ultra-processed food was associated with a 28% faster rate of cognitive decline. Ultra-processed food includes: Packaged bread. Flavored yogurt. Protein bars. Breakfast cereal. Frozen meals. Most condiments. Soda. Chips. Instant noodles." And I could add a ton of things to this list! This is the majority of the average American diet. Citation: Li H et al. Association of Ultra-Processed Food Consumption With Risk of Dementia: A Prospective Cohort Study. Neurology. 2022. Thoughts? Questions? Drop them here!

I love the idea of healing, as you mentioned, @Jeanna Finch. When we eat UPF and hinder how our cells produce and use energy, we set ourselves up for chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. AND we can heal! The body is so AMAZING!!!
Happy Sunday! What are you up to?
Just checking in to say hello and see what everybody’s up to today! We got a couple sick family members in the house, so we are going for a little walk and then we are going to curl up and watch a good family movie together. 🎬 Wha about you? πŸ€”πŸ˜

I brought my daughter back to UNH and my husband brought our son back to UMass Amherst, so lots of driving. Then I curled up under a blanket and watch the Netflix documentary on The Biggest Loser. I never watched that show, so this was all new to me. Wow, no wonder all the contestants ended up gaining their weight back. They were eating 800 cals/day and burning between 5,000-6,000 cals/day! Talk about anti-Lifestyle Evolution! So sad, really.

@Jeanna Finch eye opening to say the least. What a metabolic nightmare, never mind the emotional toll such extreme measures take on a person. πŸ˜”
Let’s share some healthy snacks ideas!
Healthy snack ideas comes up often with our clients. When we are used to thinking of snacks as something processed that comes out of a bag or a box, we forget how many healthy whole food options are out there. This is one of my favorite go tos that I actually just enjoyed - half an avocado with lime juice, sea salt and salsa. πŸ₯‘ Most people know that avocados are an amazing healthy fat to incorporate into our diets, but in this half of a medium avocado, there are also about 8 to 9 g of plant-based carbohydrates, 6 to 7 g of fiber and 2 g of protein. Avocados are also high in potassium, vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin B6, and folate. And it doesn’t hurt that I think they’re super yummy and could eat them every day! πŸ˜‹ What are some of your go to healthy snacks?

Mostly, I don't snack. However, when I really need something to tide me over, a handful of almonds or pumpkin seeds with a square or two of very dark chocolate hits the spot. When I say "very dark" I mean at least 85% and sometimes even baking chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the more satisfying it is. It helps that I love bitter flavors!

I'm slowly coming off an elemental diet, so this won't be for me at this time. I'd be happy to support others, though!
Downtime activities :)
On this snowy Sunday, board games are calling our names! β€œSorry” is a favorite around here, as well as Monopoly , Pirates of the Caribbean Life, Yahtzee 🎲, and the Family Friendly version of Cards Against Humanity. What about you?

I have tried and tried to love board games. I love the IDEA of board games. I finally decided that I'm just not a fan and that's perfectly OK. My one (almost) exception is playing Clue with my husband and kids and once a year is enough for me. Just not my thing. I am more of a "discuss the book you're reading" person, which fills my heart with joy! πŸ’—
