Is Passive Income Really Passive? Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Most passive income streams aren't truly passive—at least, not at first. If you think you can slap together a course, throw up a few affiliate links, or publish a half-baked eBook and wake up rich, I’ve got bad news for you. That’s not how this game works. The idea of passive income has been sold to most of us as some magical loophole in capitalism—a way to escape the grind and start sipping cocktails on a beach while your bank account grows. Sounds nice, right? And yet, passive income takes work. It takes strategy. And most importantly, it takes knowing what NOT to do. I currently have TWO passive income streams and TWO active ones. One of my active income streams is a regular 9-5 job that pays for all my bills and lifestyle and my other income streams create expendable income to help me buy a house next year. So, if you’re sick of scams, unrealistic promises, confusion and straight-up lifestyle lies from strangers on the internet, read on. Let’s talk about the most common passive income pitfalls—and how to avoid them. āŒPitfall #1: Thinking It’s Instant Money I hate to break it to you, but passive income is often a long game. Too many coaches, content creators, and entrepreneurs dive into this world expecting overnight results. They build a digital course, launch a membership, or slap some ads on a blog and then—nothing. šŸ’” The Fix: Give it 3–6 months (at least) to gain traction. The first phase is about, learning, building and understanding, and refining skills and knowledge. It takes time, systems, strategy and PATIENCE before things start running on autopilot. āŒPitfall #2: Creating Before Testing Here’s a mistake I have made more than one time: spending months building something nobody wants. As a coach, you can decide to create a 12-module online course, pour your heart and soul into it, and then launch to crickets. Why? Because when you build something in isolation instead of testing demand, you don't get to know your audience and how to serve them.

@Christine Szinner It is not feeding the bottom line right now, but my purposely very small (28) first "launch" is bringing me gold as I build Skool with lots of interaction and feedback—breakthroughs every couple of days. I've been doing this one-on-one for close to 30 years. By creating this membership around them, listening, and testing, I'm actually seeing members get more support than I could give them one-on-one. This was a surprise! My ego has no problem. More value for them; more freedom for me!

I'm so grateful.
What If I Lose It All?
I used to ask myself that question all the time. From the moment I started my career in 2013, I kept thinking about how one bad decision could end my path. So I started working harder. The voice in my head was unforgiving, relentless and unkind: What if you can’t keep this up? What if everything you’ve worked for disappears overnight? What if you wake up one day and it’s all gone? What will PEOPLE say? That fear kept me stuck for years—grinding, overworking, afraid to take my foot off the gas in case everything crashed around me. Between 2019 and 2021 I worked an estimated 7 months' worth of extra time on top of my 35 hour per week contract. That's 1,029 hours of my life I am never getting back! I survived solely on take-away food, had no free time, no joy in life and the money I earned felt worthless because I was ill with stress and anxiety ALL THE TIME! It cost me: šŸ’” My marriage šŸ’” My sanity šŸ’” My joy šŸ’” My confidence Between 2021 and 2025 I started (and closed) two businesses continuing to hustle my way from day to day and feeling like a failure every day. But then I realised something: I was thinking like a worker, not an owner. Workers depend on someone else. A paycheck. A client. A job that could vanish at any moment. Owners? They build. And once you learn how to build something of VALUE? You’re never afraid of losing again. Because if you can build it once, you can build it again. That’s the difference between 'fake it till you make it' and true confidence. Let's stop hustling to keep everything the same. As ChangeMakers we know that no matter what happens, we'll always know how to create something new on our terms! Will you own your future and create something of value or will you work to maintain your present?

I am 75+ and I know that journey well. I went to a Kevin Zadai event and he asked the 1000+ in the room how many had a business or wanted to start one. 80% raised their hands. He said "Good. God wants you to start that business. Because creating and keeping a business is one of the fastest ways to overcome fear." It is. Absolutely. It wasn't fast for me, but I am definitely out of it. And if feels so good. Even though I am working through the changing circumstances of a rebuild. Congratulations. You are doing this so quickly. And you didn't lose those years. You built a powerful strength that is fueling you now. And now you are walking in a trust you didn't have before. Now when that nagging little voice tries to game you again you have a two by four waiting for it. It doesn't belong anymore. I still use my 2x4, but now it works.

From Scaredy Cat to ChangeMaker (in 2 months)!
For years, I played by the conventional rules. Work hard. Save a little. Maybe, one day, I’d have enough to buy a house - or breathe. Spoiler alert: That day never came. Not because I wasn’t capable. Not because I wasn’t smart enough. But because I let my lack of confidence keep me playing small. I told myself passive income was for other people. Investors. Risk-takers. People who knew what they were doing. So, I kept trading my time for money. Working instead of building. Earning instead of owning. And where did that get me? Stressed. Exhausted. Stuck. FOR 9(!) Years! The lesson is this: Confidence isn’t what makes you successful. Taking action is. The second I stopped waiting to ā€œfeel readyā€ and started owning my financial future? Everything changed in only two months. āœ…I traded a soul-sucking job for a really lovely one āœ…I moves to Scotland (a long-time dream) āœ…I started to spend more time with the people I loved āœ…I gave myself more experiences that I want to have āœ…I created a 4-figure passive income stream (after 15 years of thinking about it) I realised that if I didn't take any action and didn't put myself out there, I would never be able to change anything. Want freedom? Go get it. šŸ”„šŸš€ What is stopping you from taking action towards your goals today?! Let me know in the comments and let's help each other grow. šŸ‘‡

It's that voice that was always showing up: "You didn't do it all today," "You're getting behind," "Do you have what it takes (although I obviously did!)", "What about the money?" It has taken a long time to knock that little gremlin away. He knows now it useless to talk to me because I'll slam the door in his face. As soon as I do I feel freedom and victory. Building on that. Maybe I'll head to Scotland! Great post, Christine. Thanks.
Making Our Group Easier to Navigate
Just wanted to point out a couple more changes to help us all navigate the group: 1ļøāƒ£I have added a little icon for every category so it's easier to see which is which. 2ļøāƒ£Categories now appear in the order in which they seem to be important to those in the group who have replied to my previous posts: Confidence, Habits, Passive Income, Lifestyle, Books. 3ļøāƒ£I have merged 'Ask for Help' and 'Accountability' into 'ā‰ļøHelp' to try and simplify the categories. 4ļøāƒ£We now have a category for 'šŸ„‡Wins' - post your wins any time to encourage others and yourselves.
