Compression
Is It Just me?... I don't like the way that music today is compressed to give an average output, killing all dynamics. I was attenting the FTM the last days and think that the final "mastering processing" did no good to the composition... When hearing "old" Albums, I always listening to the original, not the "remastered" I am mostly into music made with real instruments, aka classic, jazz, blues etc. That has maybe something to say. Maybe I'm just to old ๐Ÿ˜„ Give me your opinion, thanks

If you havenโ€™t read about The Loudness War, I would do some research. Here is @Dane Holmes doing a great overview. https://youtu.be/DUupoeAyrnw?si=ohSOpN625nHorTW5
Do you only work in the box?
What outboard gear do you use? I only have invested in a decent quality preamp (Audient ASP880) along with a UAD-2 Satellite. Everything else is in box. Any recommendations for first piece of affective entry level outboard compressor? My interface is a TASCAM 20x20 that Iโ€™ve had for ages. Also wondering if that is worth upgrading before getting any outboard gear?

@Lars Haervig the tactile piece of twisting knobs is something I miss from mixing in the box too. I use midi controllers just to have that feel sometimes.

@Lars Haervig I never knew this was a feature of the Satellite. Mind blown
Mixing engineer question
Do you guys normally go for EQ boost or you prefer saturation (or band saturation) over Eq boost? what is a case you might wanna go for EQ boost instead of saturation ? I m not a mixing engineer I m a producer so I m asking to engineers here out of curiosity.

The way that I think about it is that saturation adds harmonics that never existed in the recording; while EQ-boosts exaggerate content that is already there. If you want more of the body of that snare, saturation will not help you

Voxengo Span
Hey! Been trying to download Voxengo Span on Logic, but I don't see it in my daw even after following all the directions & restarting my computer. Anybody else having the same issue?

@Chris Nam check the system requirements. You may have too old/new version of Logic. I am still running Logic 10.5 cus I have some plugins that I donโ€™t want to let go of. This has gotten me into trouble with wanting some of the newer stuff though!

I had this issue with Soundtoys, but I realized I need to update my OS and version of logic. Iโ€™d rather stick with my stuff that I know that works than get a free plate reverb
Mixing During Production?
Hello all, I produce and mix my own music, and in the Fix the Mix challenges, these processes are clearly delineated with gain staging and basically starting the mix process from scratch. I usually mix a bit as I produce - volume, panning, some effects etc. Is it really a lot better to bounce and everything and do a separate mixing session, or is it okay to mix as you go; what are the pros and cons, and any tips for mixing as you go to keep it clean and such? Thanks all : )

I mix as I produce, but always start fresh to do โ€œthe mix.โ€ The mixing during production is something that I bounce and use as a reference and I can always go back to the older version to see how I got certain sounds
