Seed preparation
Do you do anything special to prep certain seeds before planting to ensure a good germination? If so, which seeds, what do you do, and why? Here’s a video about fermenting tomato seeds prior to planting and why it’s important to get that slick gel-like substance off the seeds for better results. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Tp9MmjaBu/?mibextid=wwXIfr

For tomatoes i let them sit in water for a few days and keep changing the water out until the gel coat from the seed falls off. Now for planting......i have soaked seeds in extract before to help with germination but i didn't do a side by side to see if there was a difference. For some seeds that need cold stratification i have placed them in the fridge but i usually forget about them and they end up molding......(out of sight out of mind)

@Julie Vigil Its just the worst....i forget every single time. Not once have i gotten it right
Old seeds v. new seeds
Welp, I learned the hard way that old seeds really don’t do as well as new seeds. I’ve tried three rounds of germinating seeds (bush and pole beans) in trays and twice direct sown, and I don’t think I’ll get anywhere w them. I’m bummed. I had several varieties I really wanted to try, but the seed packets are more than a couple years old, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised they’re gonzo. Hopefully it’s not too late in season to try one more time! So, I’m at the grocery store today and I see a bag of “15 Bean Soup.” I figured it can’t hurt to try some of these — and you can’t beat the price, 15 bean varieties for under $3.50! 😂🌱👍🏼 — and if it still doesn’t work, I guess I can always make soup. What do you think, am I silly for trying this? Have you grown beans or anything like it this way?

Really bad wind storm last night
I was so worried about our new hoop houses, and the worms. I didn't sleep a wink last night.

@Julie Vigil I love that design where he plants stuff in his walking paths. Thats a great way to use othewise wasted place. I do think if you plant more things and plant them together you will get better results....atleast thats what i have seen personally.

@Julie Vigil Yea that would be cool if we lived in an environment that was humid. The only thing I was able to grow here was the desert shaggy mane and inky caps. I know a company in town that does really well growing and selling mushrooms.
Increasing Bacteria
Question @Dennis Wichter Is the fungal-dominant and bacterial-dominant two different ecosystems... Would increasing bacteria tend to increased the bacteria predators cycling more life and nutrients in the soil without affecting the fungal world?

@Jim Flach @Phillip Greenwood you are correct it would add nitrogen to the soil and feed bacteria.

@Phillip Greenwood @Jim Flach There’s a lot of good points in here. One thing I’d add is that bacteria don’t really stay at a fixed level—they’re constantly changing based on food, moisture, and oxygen. Also, there isn’t a ‘perfect’ 1:1 bacteria to fungi ratio. Different plants actually prefer different balances. When we add things like compost or extracts, we’re not permanently throwing things out of balance we’re just influencing the system for a short time. The environment ends up deciding what sticks. Nature’s always adjusting… we’re just giving it a little nudge.
