⚠️ Beware about BoA Resident Alien application!
Saw the approval posts here recommending BoA online - went for it today, made it all the way to the final step, then stopped and want to share what I found before someone else clicks through without reading. If you select "Resident Alien" in the application (which is what makes the online flow work), the last screen is basically a W-9 form. You're certifying, under penalty of perjury, that you're a "U.S. citizen or other U.S. person." Resident Alien" is a tax term, not something that comes with your ITIN. To actually qualify you need one of:A Green Card, or 183+ days physically in the US or A formal first-year election If you live abroad and just have an ITIN, technically you're a Non-Resident Alien. The correct form is W-8BEN, not W-9. Stuff that can go wrong if you sign W-9 anyway: - Account closed at the next yearly KYC review - When a bank closes you for fraud/misrep, they report it to ChexSystems and Early Warning Services (EWS). EWS is owned by Chase, BofA, Wells, Cap One, US Bank, PNC, Truist — they all see each other's flags in real time. ChexSystems sticks for 5 years. Most mainstream US banks pull both before opening anything new. - Automatic 24% backup withholding on interest - IRS expects a full 1040 with worldwide income - Any future US visa or ESTA form asks if you ever made a false statement to get a benefit. Bank account counts. Just wanted folks to know what's behind that final checkbox before clicking. Not worth it in my opinion.

@John Flack I tried this with US Bank but they started asking for SSN and State ID before even opening account.
USBank account opening failed.
I submitted two applications, one through the official website and the other through the insurance company's website. Afterwards, I faxed my passport, CP565 form, insurance policy, and bank statements to USBank. USBank sent a letter saying they could not verify my identity. I called customer service and was transferred to a manager, but they both said they could not verify my identity or upload more documents via the link. I don't know why it failed. Is it because of duplicate applications that their risk control measures have been upgraded? The letter mentioned that I needed to submit my SSN and federal tax returns for identity verification.

Happened to me, US Bank insisted on State ID and SSN even though I entered ITIN in the application.

@Uss Discover Apparently, US Bank is very conservative which makes them one of the harder banks to work with when first starting off.
Which carrier is everyone using?
Hi all, I've been struggling to sign up for a plan with Metro or T-Mobile Prepaid, as it keeps saying "Customer information could not be verified." I also looked at AT&T and Verizon but their plans are very expensive. I'm with Tello right now, but need something with Carrier Verification and Outgoing Caller ID (CNAM).

@Aaron Ng So I originally though banks like Capital One used CNAM to verify you but it looks like that's not the case anymore so I don't think it is important. I might make a post on this soon.
Checking ✅ Saving ❌
If you have filled the form as RESIDENT ALIEN, make sure to move your funds to Checking account instead of saving account. The interest income in your accounts will be reported to IRS if its more than $10 and if you have filled form as RESIDENT, it will mess up in your tax filing. - Filled as Resident, use interest-free account ( so no interest reporting ) - Filled as NRA, you can use saving account and earn interest as it will be reported accordingly. I am doing this for now: - DCU - RA - Checking Account ( Moved yesterday only , I almost missed it. Got some interest already but below $10 ) - SDFCU - NRA - Saving Account - Earning Interest 🤑

Is it safe to open accounts as Resident then if you earn no interest or should we still be cautious and only do Non-Resident?
Capital One shutting down prepaid numbers?
I contacted Capital One’s fraud department to ask if they could reopen my account after the recent shutdown. I wasn’t necessarily expecting a reversal, I was mostly trying to understand the reason on their end. The agent explained that they couldn’t see the exact cause for the closure, but mentioned that not being able to verify my identity through my wireless carrier had triggered a flag in their system. This made me wonder, could using a prepaid phone number, or having less than six months of credit history, lead to an account shutdown because identity verification fails?

@Apple Service My address was wrong so I went to change it in my profile but it said they cannot send a text to my number because it isn't postpaid and I can't pass Carrier Verification

@Brian Mora Yes, the agent sent me the link but when I clicked it, it didn't work and she said it is because of my number. We tried a few times but no luck.
