8 Standing postures
This mornings routine was the 8 Standing postures. I had no specific expectations, but knew, as always, that something would come from the video. I started, off video ,with some loosening drills to prepare myself. This morning is cold here in southern Spain with an outside temp of just 4º. I say this because by the time I was 12 minutes into the video, I could really feel the heat building. During the bending forward exercise I was beginning to take exceptionally deep breaths and exhales. Now I don't know if this is a natural process, but I started to feel very slightly dizzy. No big issue, however I wanted to mention it. I feel that I have a lot of work to do on my balance. The Golden Rooster stance is very difficult. I can manage 1 or 2 on the right leg but the left, impossible. Any tips would be gratefully received. Many Thanks

Hi Pedro, I have occasionally experienced dizziness during my practice. While it isn’t always consistent with the same postures, my best understanding is that it is connected to our intake of oxygen. I have some other medical challenges that tend to challenge my balance, but this is the closest I’ve come to an idea as to why it happens in relation to the deep breathing. My main suggestion would be to hold still as best as you can when you first notice the dizziness and practice natural or more shallow breathing to see if your equilibrium levels out and your balance returns. @Kirby Mannon can likely offer some more specific and informed input, but I thought I’d at least share based on my experience.

Congratulations to my fellow winners and many thanks! It has been great to see how our community has continued to grow, and the New Year challenge was a great way to come together to start the year intentionally. I'm grateful to be part of this community. Right after learning I was one of the winners, I learned a new quote from Bruce Lee that feels appropriate to share. "As a person matures, he will realize his skills are not so much tools to conquer others, but tools used to explode his ego and all its follies."

End of day practice while watching Dragon Fist. Mainly stance work with a focus on full foot pressure. Before: A bit overheated and sore. Mentally scattered, but determined to focus on my practice. After: Warm but not overheated. Breathing easier.

@Patrick Cunningham Thanks! Other than positioning the pin and taking the photo, I didn’t do much. The yin yang pin at the center is a keepsake of mine from Seattle’s Chinatown and I liked how the angle created another play on light and dark.
Connection between foot strength and knee pain
This is a moment where I wonder what came first, the knee pain or the lack of connection and strength of my feet while Im generally living my life. Taiji walking was like a lightbulb turning on for me because it totally hurt my right knee! I realized that I adapt my movements to not trigger the knee pain and that has a definite effect on the practice. I am wondering if I focus more on strengthening my feet during my everyday life if my knee might improve? (I played competitive soccer for many years so there's a lot of wear and tear on an aging body also). Anyone relate or have some experience with this?

I can't say for sure about the improvement, but I know I can relate. Most recently, I've had a knee issue in my left leg that was never specifically diagnosed or summed up as to what the problem actually is. When I first started doing Tai Chi again last autumn, I noticed some movements were a bit difficult. Over time and adapting my stances, I think I have improved the strength in both my legs and feet.
Sleeping position
I have been doing Qigong and a little Tai ji for close to a month now. Besides all the normal things that occur with a completely new practice such as aching muscles etc, I have noticed something which has really hit me. As far as I can remember, my whole life I have been a side sleeper, mainly left side but occasionally right side. A week ago I noticed that I am now a back sleeper, I CANNOT fall to sleep on my side. However I do turn onto one side or the other for a short time during the night. As I also have my arms either down by my side or across my chest, I started to wonder if this was something to do with 'grounding'. Has anyone else experienced this or similar and can the teachers explain this phenomenon. (Or am I just being weird?)

I haven't noticed any specific changes in my sleep position, but I know I've been able to use Qi gong as a sleep aid so I'm more calm when I head to bed. The sleep change I've noticed is most linked to our breath work, or at least I think that is what changed it. I've been known to grind my teeth while sleeping for years. As far as I can tell, I've become accustomed to having my tongue touch the roof of my mouth and that seems to have led to a reduction in my jaw tension. Not entirely certain, but I'm all for it.
