Competition and Starting MY Own Business.
How does everyone deal with competition? Im in Medford Oregon and I want to start a window washing business eventually adding in gutter cleaning and pressure washing but in my area there are 13 other services that are preforming the same treatment and I don’t know how to stand out from the rest. I am currently a cement mixer truck driver so it’s a huge leap in a different direction. Do I quit my day job and put all my time in this? I have a 10,000 dollar start up and want to know what everyone’s thoughts and experiences are so I don’t fail or do something stupid.

Oh and for what it's worth, 17 isn't bad. There's probably more than that, but I've probably got like 50+ in my market 😜 there's plenty of glass for everyone!

@Tyson Clague great perspective. It’s definitely better to look at the other businesses as colleagues rather than competition. It’s great to network with them and offer support, and the opportunities multiply from there. The more people educating the market on the value of our service, the better off we all are!

@Jon DeBlauw I just clean windows every day but I would say door knocking is better in the evenings and weekends, I am all for packing in as much work as you can in a day. You could also book a job in the morning and then door knock the rest of the day. I find having something to get me moving in the morning helps me tremendously. Then you can door knock the neighbors of where you’re working letting them know you’re working in the neighborhood As far as cleaning goes, you’ll get faster with practice. Water fed pole is great and definitely can be faster, but first time cleans I’m a big fan of using a ladder to scrub by hand with steel wool. In general though, water fed pole can be almost twice as fast as traditional. I did a video a while back taking about my thoughts on WFP vs Trad: https://youtu.be/zD-pkpRDHxg

@Tyson Clague welcome to the club, Tyson! You’ve already done one of the hardest parts in getting started, and you’ll become more efficient in time the more experience you get. The speed will come eventually! Right now it’s most important to keep pulling on levers to figure out what works for your area with regards to advertising, so that you can get the consistent work. Best of luck to you!
Referral links
I’m looking at going to Responsibid and Jill’s Office. Both have steep $500 to $600 startup costs. @Benjamin Millen, do you have any referral links / discount codes? BTW, I’m locked and loaded currently with House Call Pro but I have been unimpressed with their answer service.

I don’t have much as far as savings from ResponsiBid, but there’s a small discount if you use this link: https://get.responsi.bid/46VDM6 Jill’s Office’s affiliate program is brand new and I’m not sure what their promos are, or if they have any discounts at all… I’m hoping there’s some type of discount they add 😅 I haven’t had much communication with them yet as it’s so new https://getstarted.jillsoffice.com/getstartednow?am_id=BluLadder

@Barry Pierce awesome, thanks for the heads up! It’s been a while since I did any searching, there might’ve been one other company at the time who could offer a similar level of service, but I don’t know if they exist anymore and can’t remember what they were called. I still use Jills Office answer all my phone calls. They’re not always 100% perfect, but they’ve never made a mistake that can’t easily be corrected, and most customers have no idea that the person on the phone isn’t a family member or employee of the company. I don’t use them for any admin related tasks, but for in bound calls when I can’t or don’t want to answer, it’s great with ResponsiBid. ResponsiBid itself may take a little tweaking over time, but the Jill’s Office people always mention that we’ll confirm the price when we arrive in case anything needs to change, without causing doubt or fear that things will be dramatically difference. I’ve basically just resigned my pricing to whatever ResponsiBid says, so I hardly ever even count windows myself any more.
Window Cleaning Soap
What’s your favorite window cleaning soap (or soap combination)? So far I’ve only used Maykker Orange Krush or Dawn. I also have an order coming this week with Maykker EcoKrush, Moerman Deluxe, and Glass Gleam 4, so I’m looking forward to testing those out. Lately I’ve decided to stick with professional soaps because I like the idea of using products specifically designed for glass and professional window cleaning. My understanding is that Dawn can sometimes leave behind a slight residue or film that may cause windows to attract dirt faster over time. Since I’m charging premium pricing, I want the products I use to reflect that level of service. I’m also planning to lean more into eco-friendly marketing going forward. Curious to hear what everyone else prefers and why.

@Darius Irani no, not particularly, usually similar concentrations. You don’t need much, just a few small beads of soap will go a long way, regardless of brand or viscosity. Regardless of brand I’ll usually start with a small bead of soap on my strip washer and then add a squirt to whatever solution I’m using, whether a bucket of water for outside or a spray bottle for inside.

@Darius Irani I say pick your favorite smell if neither is significantly better. Those little touches (like fragrance) can make a difference in how enjoyable the work is, as well as the customers perceived value of the service. Definitely great when a good scent is lingering behind!
cleaning limescale deposits on stone
I was asked if I could clean limescale deposits, on stone from Spain (natural stone). I watered with CLR then I brushed and rinsed with demineralized water, without result. Could someone here advise me? Thanks

Not sure how bad it was, but sounds like you need a heavier acid. Gets a little more dangerous, and you need appropriate safety gear (mask for the fumes and gloves for your hands, plus goggles for your eyes), but here in the states we have Muriatic Acid available at most stores, and that’s what I’d try. You’ll likely need several coats, and some extra scrubbing.
