Have you ever heard of "citations"? We do this for our SEO clients to boost their AI search and 3-pack search results... but you can do it on your own as well! Here's the right way!
PS - I made this video with AI. Yes, I wrote the script. (well, edited it so it was accurate, lol) Is it goofy or "good enough"? (it doesn't quite talk like me but I thought I'd try it)
Here's the text, if you prefer reading!
Are you a service business owner? I'm Deacon Nick, and I'm going to show you some cheap and easy ways to not only get your listing found on page 1 of Google and the 3-pak, but in the new AI searches as well!
One of the most powerful, yet underused, tools to boost your Google Business Profile and climb to page one is something called “citations.”
I’ll break down exactly what citations are, why they matter, and how to use them correctly! I’ll also show you how to get shown in the new AI search results that are changing how people find contractors.
Let’s start with the basics.
What Are Citations?
Online, a citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number. When these details appear consistently online, Google sees your business as legitimate, trustworthy, and relevant. Any time you include this info online, write it out exactly as it is shown on your Google Business Profile!
Google calls this your “business signal strength.”
Why do Citations Matter for Your Google Business Profile?
Google uses citations to verify that your business exists, where it’s located, and that it’s stable.
Without consistent citations, your business can look shaky or even fake to Google. That’s why contractors who ignore citations stay buried.
The key to citation success is consistency, quality, and volume. Here’s how to do it right.
First, Keep Your listing Exactly the Same Everywhere.
Your business name, address, and phone number must match 100% across every site. No variations like “Joe’s Plumbing” vs “Joe’s Plumbing LLC,” or sometimes adding a decimal and sometimes not. This is critical.
Second, start with the Major Directories.
Focus first on big, trusted platforms like Yelp and such. These carry the most ranking weight.
Then, add Industry-Specific Citations.
If you’re a plumber, list yourself on plumbing directories. If you’re a trainer, get on trainer directories. These show Google you’re relevant in your niche.
then, Build Local Citations.
Get listed on local directories, city pages, and community sites. These help you dominate searches in your service area.
Oh! Make sure to avoid Spammy or Low-Quality Sites.
Some citation services blast your business onto thousands of junk sites. Google ignores these, and they can even hurt your reputation.
You can monitor and Clean Up your citation footprint too!
Use tools to scan for incorrect citations, duplicate listings, or outdated info.
So. How Many Citations Do You Need?
For home service businesses, aim for at least 50 to 150 to start seeing real movement. As you grow, you can expand. But again, quality beats quantity. One hundred clean, accurate citations are better than 1,000 messy ones.
If you don’t want to build citations manually, there are paid services that can handle it.
Many agencies, like ours at aisprinkled.com, include citations as part of a ranking package. The best services will clean up old listings, fix errors, and add new citations over time. Avoid providers who promise thousands of citations in a day. Those are usually low-value and can hurt your profile.
Now, here is a hack to get ranked by the new AI search engines.
Many citation directories allow you to publish articles. These aren’t just listings, they’re mini websites where you can share helpful information.
Here’s why this matters for AI search:
AI-powered search engines pull answers from trusted sources. When you publish articles at citation sites, you’re creating more places where AI can find your business.
Look for directories or local platforms that let you add articles, tips, or news. Then, write Helpful, Localized Content.
Here are some examples:
- “5 Signs You Need a New Roof in Ohio”
- “Grooming to keep your dog cool in the summer.”
Or “The Best Maintenance Checklist for Dallas”
Make sure your business name, address, and phone number appear in the content, then answer Questions that People Ask AI.
AI search answers questions like “who does dog grooming near me?” Write articles that answer those exact questions.
This boosts traditional ranking, and increases your chances of appearing in AI search results.
So! Here’s your step-by-step citation plan!
Audit your current NAP across Google, your website, and social profiles. Make sure everything matches.
Build 50–100 high-quality citations using major, industry, and local directories.
Clean up duplicate or incorrect listings.
Publish 2–3 articles on citation sites that allow content, targeting local questions AI search engines answer.
Monitor your Google Business Profile rankings and adjust as needed.
And remember, citations Are a Long-Term Game
