Sigil magick 101 - The Letter Method
In this tutorial, I will be going over how to make a sigil for manifestation. I’ll give a step-by-step guide for creating, charging, and casting a sigil using what is usually referred to as “The Letter Method,” created by Austin Osman Spare in his book The Book of Pleasure.
I will not go into every detail or variation. There are many ways to charge, destroy, and cast a sigil—and countless ways to create one. Here, I’ll give only a brief run-down, focusing on the most common disposal methods and two methods of charging. Those two can also be combined.
To begin, write your statement of intent (desired outcome) on a piece of paper in the present tense. Keep it simple yet specific—many suggest 4 to 5 parameters. After writing your statement of intention, cross out all repeating letters and all vowels. You’ll omit them and bring down what letters remain. We will be creating an image out of these letters—as shown in the graphics below. One graphic demonstrates the entiroty of the process from condencinf down letters to creating the sigl and another just the sigil creation from the left over letters. Now if one letter is contained inside another (e.g., P inside R or B), you can omit it. Below, I’ve included two examples: one shows the entire process from sentence to sigil, where a sigil for obtaining peace was created. And the other graph is a sigil created from the leftover letters from the intention:
“I got my desired position at my company with great pay without causing harm.” Only showing the letter construction (The remaining letters for the sigil were GTHDSRPNMYCW)
If you don’t like how your first design looks, keep reworking it until it feels right. You may even simplify it further. Many say the subconscious mind—which sigils operate on—loves simplicity. However, I’ve had success with simple, intricate, and even messy sigils.
Charging
To charge the sigil, meditate on it by gazing or staring at it. A good trick is to look at the background behind it so you see the whole image. When doing this look at it like you are looking past or through the sigil. Don’t strain too much, but don’t get overly relaxed either.
You can:
Meditate with your mind silent or as quiet as possible, or imagine and feel as though the result has already happened. Either was so long as you are gazing at the sigil in the manner described above.
Don’t worry about the exact scenario—what matters most is feeling as though it already occurred. Even the briefest moment of this feeling is enough. Stay with it a little longer until it is flashing (as described below) before moving on.
As you charge the sigil, you may notice it warping, flashing, distorting, appearing and disappearing, or shifting in parts. This is a sign it is charging. Once it flashes, it has been charged. Still, you don’t need to stop immediately; continue until it feels complete. And don't rush out just because it flashed once. Allow it to flash as long as you can or as long as it wants.
Releasing
Next, destroy the sigil. Popular methods include:
Tearing it up or burning and: tossing the scraps / ashes into running water, throwing the scraps / ashes into the wind or burying the scraps / ashes. You can also just throw the sigil in running water.
These all work on the principle that nature abhors a vacuum—and the vacuum will be filled with your result.
Finally, let go and detach. Eat, go for a walk, or do something to take your mind off the magick. Forget the spell as best you can. You’ve placed it in the universe’s hands—now wait for what is already yours.
