When I recorded my album βMindβs Eyeβ, over 10 yrs ago, a lot of the parts I recorded, like instrumental parts, were made up on the spot. However, while most of the songs were written prior to recording, in some way shape or form, this one idea that I truly wanted to record was this one line chorus βOne foot infront of the other!β Thatβs all I had. I was not even improvising many lyrics to it at first! Iβd play the thumb piano when jamming with the ideas also, which was later used as the main instrument in the song!
When it came time to recording the first tracks for the songs, namely the drum tracks, the song One Foot still didnβt have any real form.. just one line and a groove!
For me, the process that unfolded was such an experience of trusting the moment and letting things truly happen!
So the drummer could record the drums to the song we didnβt even have yet, I jammed along on the keys while we recorded the βsongβ! We had no idea where we were going! I would sing random words and put in the chorus line one footβ¦We just had fun!
While we were playing, the drummer suddenly stopped playing, thinking it would be the end! I was a bit surprised but then said βkeep going, come back into itβ and he did!
Later, I added in the other vocals and instruments, apart from bass. It was all improvised from there on!
I hope when you hear this recording, that you hear a freedom and a playfulness that happens when you create music on the spot!
Sometimes, music does not want to be controlled or manipulated the way we want it to be! Sometimes, it just wants to be free to be!!! Even if it goes against all reason or conventionπ
