First Coffee Chat: Key Takeaways & Topics of Discussion
On Friday we hosted our first coffee chat. I wanted to thank Arjun and Jonathan for attending our first coffee chat! I believe the first session went well, and that everyone took a lot away from it. We may make some changes to these sessions moving forward, but we'll A/B test different sessions and see what works best.
Below is a recap of our discussion, key takeaways, and next steps:
- Networking is a great job search tool – Coffee chats and informational interviews build connections, but relationships take time. Use ADPList.org and LinkedIn strategically.
2. Quality over quantity in applications – A highly targeted approach (25+ companies, tailored applications) is more effective than mass applying. Invest time in crafting standout applications. Why? Because in every pool of applicants, there will be a handful that go above and beyond to stand out.
3. Focus on your strengths – If you’re failing technical assessments, prioritize prep. If you’re not landing interviews, focus on networking. Align your search strategy with your skills.
4. Industry transitions require a strategic plan – Moving from oil & gas to renewables? Your best bet is an internal transfer within a company that operates in both industries or locations.
5. Overcome job search anxiety – Most people want to help! Send messages, follow up, and track productivity to stay accountable and build momentum. Don't expect results to happen instantly. Most of the time, you still need to put in the effort.
6. Stay consistent and adapt – Job searching is a marathon, not a sprint. The average job search takes 9-12 months—stay persistent and refine your approach along the way. You can cut time off of your job search using many different tactics.
