Gilgamesh was the first recorded "diver" more than 4,000 years ago! The cuneiform script on clay tablets recorded his dive underwater to snatch the "Plant of Eternal Youth," in 2800 BC. The story goes that he attached heavy stones to his feet to drag him to the depths of the ocean. He found and took the plant before cutting the rocks from his feet to take him back to the surface. Once ashore, he felt it would be a good time for a nap and fell asleep. While sleeping a devious snake came and gobbled up the plant before poor Gilgamesh could be forever youthful! This tale became the first documentation of breath holding.
