Meteoric Shower of Nov. 13, 1833 (Leonids). Artist: Adolf Vollmy, after Karl Jauslin. Date of engraving: 1888–1889 AD. Medium: wood engraving produced for the Adventist volume Bible Readings for the Home Circle. In the pre‑dawn hours of November 12–13, 1833, North America entered a dense ribbon of comet dust. The sky erupted. Contemporary estimates speak of tens of thousands sometimes well over 100,000 meteors per hour, a pace that made the heavens seem alive and, to many, apocalyptic. Newspapers, diaries and later recollections christened it “the night the stars fell.”
