I don't know about you but my week has been less than quiet. In fact its been relentlessly loud and boisterous. Loud in emotion, loud in stress, not so loud in thought funnily enough, and with enough inner spaciousness to experience the stress without being too spun out and reactive - which I'm putting down as testament to a regular practice of quiet - but high activity without a lot of mental emotional digestive time.
I was reading on substack earlier about how informational obesity is killing us. But first its dumbing us down. By breakfast we have consumed a war, 4 political opinions, 7 linkedin sermons, a celebrity divorce, someone explaining quantum physics in 43 seconds, another person telling you why coffee is killing you, a podcast clip in which a 24 year old millionaire is telling you why waking up at 4:37AM changed his life... Our brains were never designed for this buffet. Informational obesity has the same tragedy as physical obesity: you can be completely stuffed and still terribly undernourished.
Being plugged into the collective nervous system 247 is more than our individual nervous systems are able to handle. So much noise, so little genuine signal.
This is why quiet practice is so relevant today, to create inner space as the last line against the flooding of the brain with light and sound from around the globe. This image by Beeple feels particularly relevant. Reminds of how I feel after eating a pack of sweet shop candies....
See you in two hours
