Major Issues already with Amazon's AI Replacement
Amazon cut around 16,000 employees last year, including a significant number of engineers and required their employees to use their internal AI tools Kiro and Q with usage mandates tied to performance metrics. But it backfired. One AI-assisted action wiped a production environment tied to Cost Explorer, causing a 13-hour outage. And earlier this month the AI pushed bad code that led to massive retail failures, including roughly 120,000 lost orders, 1.6 million site errors, and then a bigger outage that disrupted about 99% of North American orders (6.3 million orders) for hours. Amazon lost hundreds of millions of dollars due to this incident.
Amazon isn't even the only company having issues with AI replacement. I saw Klarna, Duolingo, Salesforce, and few companies other companies who pushed AI replacement heavily backtrack from it as well. But of course the media won't report on this.
TLDR: They replaced engineers with AI, the AI broke critical systems, and now the “fix” is adding more human oversight back on top of the AI they doubled down on.
