Seeing with Intent - Assignment 8: The Moment of Commitment
Assignment: “Decide and Shoot”
Objective
Train your ability to recognize and act on the Moment of Commitment without hesitation.
Constraints (Important)
  • Shoot 30 total images max
  • No burst mode
  • No more than 2 shots per scene
  • Each image must be a decision, not an exploration
Task
Over 2–3 shooting sessions:
Capture 10 final images where:
  • The subject is clear
  • The framing is intentional
  • The moment feels chosen—not accidental
Required Approach
For every photo:
  1. Pause
  2. Identify the subject
  3. Say (mentally):
  4. Take the shot
No hesitation. No refinement loop.
Reflection (Critical Component)
For each of the 10 images, students must answer:
  1. What made you commit to this moment?
  2. What did you exclude from the frame?
  3. What would have happened if you had waited 2 seconds?
  4. Was your instinct right? Why or why not?
Evaluation Criteria
Images will be judged on:
  • Clarity of intent (Is the subject obvious?)
  • Decisiveness (Does it feel deliberate?)
  • Timing (Does the moment feel chosen?)
  • Emotional impact (Does it communicate something?)
