Visual storytelling is the art of using a photograph to communicate something beyond what is merely visible. A strong visual story does not simply show a subject. It invites the viewer to feel, wonder, remember, question, or connect.
In the Visual Storytelling Lab, we focus on four foundational principles:
- Subject: Every visual story needs a clear subject. Ask yourself: What is this photograph really about?
- Emotion: Stories create emotional responses. What feeling do you want the viewer to experience?
- Context: Context provides clues that help viewers understand the story. Where is this happening? What details help explain the moment?
- Intent: Every choice in a photograph should support the story. Composition, light, timing, color, and perspective all help communicate your message.
There are no perfect answers. We use a 365-day prompt format to become more aware of the stories hidden inside everyday moments.
