Ego or Marketing?
Recently, I was driving on the highway and saw a huge poster of a company, with the owners’ faces displayed prominently.
What do you think:
• Is it ego, or smart marketing?
• Would you dare to do something like that to promote yourself as a coach/healer/Reiki practitioner?
As a marketer, I’m curious about your opinion!
Sharing my thoughts, and what I’d advise from a marketing perspective, below. I deliberately waited for others to respond before sharing my perspective, which is why you’ll find my input below as a comment.
Before you read on: take a moment to reflect on your own view first. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks again for all the responses!
It’s truly fascinating to see the different perspectives on this. From a marketing point of view, I see both sides: a large poster showing the owners’ faces can definitely come across as egotistical because it’s so visible and personal. Some people prefer to keep their distance. My first reaction when I saw it was: is that really necessary? But the poster stuck with me. And as a marketer, I also see the value of it. So in that sense, it’s smart marketing, and I’d like to explain why (if you’re open to it), showing yourself this way can actually be really powerful.
In a world full of competition, showing your face has become increasingly important, especially now that there are so many channels to be visible. How else will people notice you? I’m seeing more and more coaches, healers, and Reiki practitioners slowly daring to advertise with their faces. It immediately makes things more personal and helps people feel a connection. I remember Justin once said in a session in Amsterdam: "Through your website and your words, people can sense whether they resonate with you. That’s how you show your energy, if it’s genuine. And that’s how you attract the right people." And it’s true. Think about which kinds of communication grab your attention and from which types of people or websites. That’s where energy comes into play again.
I also see a lot of videos and websites from coaches that feel quite commercial, and I often wonder: is this really valuable advice, or just part of a hype? But I often notice: maybe they’re not for me, but when I look at their comments or followers, I see that many people actually appreciate them deeply.
And if you show your face more often (in newspapers, flyers, online), people will start to recognize you. As you grow, your face becomes more important. When people recommend you with something like “they’re so kind and good,” others may start seeing your photo differently too. Positive stories can shift their perception, they begin to associate your photo with warmth and kindness. Maybe they recognize something in you that they’ve experienced themselves, and that process can happen in an instant. Their visual perception of you shifts, because their expectations and emotions change too.
But it could also be that your photo initially gave off an ego-driven vibe. And then, when they meet you at a party, they suddenly feel your true energy. Maybe the photo didn’t capture your essence properly, or you came across differently, possibly more ego. But here’s the interesting part: they still recognized you, which means the marketing worked.
So yes, a big poster might seem like ego at first but it’s actually effective marketing that helps you show yourself and build trust (perhaps even for the future, when someone’s energy shifts and they need what you offer). Especially in a competitive market where you want your business to stand out, visibility is essential.
Just like in real life: let people see you, let them know what you do, so they start talking about you. They might not feel connected to you right now but later, when their energy aligns with yours, they might want to work with you after all.
