A Complainful Space
D'you ever feel like you're "bumming people out" talking about your illness or disability? I know I felt that way for a long time. I'd tell someone about what I was going through, and I'd hear things like:
"Don't think that way, it'll be better soon."
"My friend saw this doctor who...."
"Focus on the good stuff!"
And this always pisses me off! Personally, I have found a LOT of use in complaining, as long as it's to people who are up for it.
And I know of no one who's more up for it than other chronically ill folks.
Some of my biggest "aha" moments have been the result of a gripe. I was nauseous, I complained about it to my friend with POTS, and she taught me that sniffing alcohol wipes is a quick way to calm down an upset tummy (not-a-doctor disclaimer goes here, this is NOT medical advice). But it worked for me!
It wasn't until I complained FIERCELY about how very very tired I was that my doctor recommended the stimulants that have saved my ass!
All of this is to say that I want to hear your complaints, and will be debuting a "What Sucks Today" themed post specifically for venting.
A couple rules:
  1. If you're complaining, please write whether you want or don't want advice. A lot of the time, we want to just be heard, right? But if you want advice, that's cool too!
  2. If you're listening to a complaint, be sure to abstain from advice if it's not specifically asked for.
  3. This is not the Sadness Olympics. Everyone's complaints are valid, and there is no prize for the Most Miserable.
What do y'all think? Could you use a Complainful Space?
