Before AI accelerated so much of daily work, the workday was naturally punctuated by small, unplanned pauses: waiting for a page to load, waiting for a colleague's reply, waiting for a document to process, the brief gap between finishing one task and being able to start the next. These moments were rarely valued or even consciously noticed at the time, but they functioned, whether anyone realized it or not, as brief periods of cognitive recovery, small mental resets scattered naturally throughout the day. AI's speed has quietly eliminated a meaningful portion of these gaps, and a specific, underexamined form of fatigue appears to be emerging as a result, one that isn't primarily about total workload, but about the disappearance of these small, naturally occurring recovery moments. ------------- Context ------------- Cognitive research on attention and mental fatigue has long recognized that sustained focus benefits from periodic brief breaks, even very short ones, that allow attention to disengage momentarily before re-engaging with a task. Historically, much of this brief disengagement happened incidentally, built into the natural friction of work itself: waiting for something to load or process, waiting for a response, the small transitional moments between one task ending and the next beginning. Nobody deliberately scheduled these moments as recovery time. They simply existed as a natural byproduct of work that had inherent waiting built into it. AI has systematically removed much of this natural waiting. Tasks that used to require processing time now often complete near-instantly. Responses that used to take time to formulate can now arrive rapidly. The cumulative effect is a workday with meaningfully fewer of these small, incidental pauses, which means the brief cognitive recovery they used to provide, however unintentional and unnoticed, is also largely gone, replaced by a more continuous stream of engaged, effortful attention with fewer natural moments of disengagement built into the structure of the day itself.
