Ever had a company pass on you at a career fair and immediately start wondering if the whole industry just isn't interested in someone like you? It's a natural jump to make, but it's a much bigger leap than the evidence actually supports.
Here's the thing. A recruiter's read on one conversation, on one specific day, tells you almost nothing about whether an entire field is genuinely a fit. It tells you something about that company's needs in that moment, maybe about the specific role being discussed, sometimes just about bad timing. "This company wasn't a fit" and "this field isn't for me" are two completely different conclusions, and only one of them is actually backed up by what happened at that table.
Before writing off a whole direction because of one no, it's worth getting specific about what actually didn't land. Was it the company itself, the particular role, the timing of the conversation, or genuinely something about the field. In the vast majority of cases, it's one of the first three, not the field itself.
This matters a lot for anyone in this community weighing whether to keep pursuing a direction after a setback. One data point isn't a pattern, and treating it like one closes off paths based on far less evidence than the conclusion actually needs.
