Procrastination is rewarding
is isScrolling. Snacking. Checking email instead of doing deep work.
People tend to call these "bad habits". And that's why they never go away.
Calling a behaviour "bad" doesn't explain why it keeps happening.
Nothing your nervous system does is meaningless. If a behaviour is still happening, something is rewarding for it.
A lot of the time, that reward is Relief.
Your client sits down to the hard thing. The stress builds. Their phone goes bing, and they turn to Messenger notifications or scrolling Instagram.
That's an instant hit of relief.
So the "bad habit" is a solution. A very effective one, to a problem your client hasn't named yet.
Here's where coaching can go wrong.
If you don't know what the behaviour is rewarding, you can't change it.
You're asking your client to walk away from something that reliably makes them feel better, in exchange for nothing but a vague sense that they should.
That's not a fair fight. The old habit will win every time.
So stop asking "how do I get them to stop?"
Start asking "what's the payoff?"
That Payoff is the fourth part of our behavioural LOOP. All four parts together show you exactly why your client is stuck.
Finding that something is what the workshop Why Clients Don't Do the Work is about.
